Fortnite Season 9 has dropped and along with the usual cavalcade of changes comes a rather unique addition to Fortnite called ‘Fortbytes’. Fortbytes are Epic’s attempt to bring something new to the Season 9 table other than map and thematic changes. They act as a hybrid between a collectible and a large-scale series of challenges.

There are 100 squares on the grid and each square represents a single Fortbyte. The numbered grids correspond to the challenges on the left. For example, Fortbyte #1 requires you gain 175,000 XP, Fortbyte #44 requires you achieve Battle Pass Tier 20, etc. Some of these can be quite the slog to obtain, such as Fortbyte #90 which asks you to place top 10 in games 100 times this season. However, these initially available Fortbytes (minus one) all seem to have a focus on longer term grinds (collect XP, win games, etc.).
What Do Fortbytes Look Like?
The unnumbered grids are reserved for Fortbytes that are unlocked by the game sequentially every 24 hours. These Fortbytes may or may not have specific challenges associated with them, but it is quite likely a large portion of them will be placed on the map for players to manually find. The Fortbyte themselves aren’t particularly big and can be easily hidden in the nooks and crannies of the map, which means finding them may prove difficult. However, Fortbyte #36 tends to suggest the ones we do need to find will come with a hint of some kind.
For Season 9’s release, 18 Fortbytes have become available and one is released every day thereafter according to the timer above the challenge list. It is presumed these unlocks are actually correlated to the map spawns. As the first 18 are linked to the challenge list, of which none ask you to find an actual Fortbyte (minus one, under specific conditions).
If for whatever reason, you are unable to interact with a specific Fortbyte, it will appear transparent until you meet the required condition, which is described next to the collect prompt.
Fortbyte Puzzle Reveal
Once a Fortbyte is collected, it will reveal what the grid hides. Currently, it looks likely that a large picture (‘mysterious message’) is hidden behind the corrupted grid of Fortbytes. Apparently this will uncover the ‘secrets’ of Season 9. My money is on a teaser for Season 10 along with an explanation for the paint of ‘sci-fi’ coat on a map that recently suffered a cataclysm. As it stands, this is all that is known about Fortbytes until the first one unlocks later on down the line.
Fortnite Season 9 Fortbytes Locations Guide
As mentioned earlier, there are 100 Fortbytes in total. 18 were released with Season 9’s debut and at least one is released every 24 hours thereafter at 2PM BST. Some of the Fortbytes released require rewards from the free-tier or Battle Pass tier to complete, so keep that in mind when trying to finish the list.
