With more and more games seemingly being released each year, it’s also getting harder and harder to put together a complete guide like this. For our rundown of the biggest new games of 2019, we’ve already surpassed the depth of its 2018 equivalent.
2019 brings with it a whole host of new games that are sure to scratch whatever itch you may have. From long delayed games finally getting their chance in the spotlight to brand new IPs with the marketing budget of the GDP of Burkina Faso, there’s plenty to get excited about.
We’re dividing our guide to the new games of 2019 into each month of the year and will be adding to it whenever a new game is announced for the year. Likewise, if a game is delayed we will also move it around in the release schedule. We are also focusing specifically on new games only, so no remasters. For all games due in 2019 without a specific release date, we’ll be adding it to the TBC section.

Kingdom Hearts 3 | January 25th/29th, 2019

The long-awaited follow-up to the Kingdom Hearts series finally lands early next year, a few days in Japan before everywhere else. What’s a tiny bit more waiting going to do to dissuade Kingdom Hearts after all this time, though? Kingdom Hearts 3 looks like the most ambitious entry in the series to date, until Kingdom Hearts 3.2: Jazz Quartet Inferno, of course.

Resident Evil 2 Remake | January 25th, 2019

It would have been easy for Capcom to half-ass their long-gestating Resident Evil 2 remake. Not the case: it appears as if they’re going all out on this one. Featuring modern controls and visuals, the re-imagining of the classic will show limb degradation in all its visceral glory, as well as some new areas not shown in the original. If it’s half as excellent as the Gamecube remake of the first game, itself one of the best horror games ever, Resident Evil 2 should be just fine.

Announced one minute and then out the next, it’s fair to say that Apex Legends has already become one of the biggest new games of 2019. A free-to-play battle royale that mixes genres to feel like something that has never really been so far, it’s been a revelation and one of the most addictive games in recent memory. As long as it gets the support and updates it needs, it has a very bright future ahead of it.

Jump Force | February 15th, 2019

Shonen Jump games have never reach a massive audience in the West, but thanks to the success of the likes of Dragon Ball FighterZ (and also everyone now being an anime fan), Jump Force could for the niche what World did for Monster Hunter. Packed with iconic heroes and tantalising match-ups, Jump Force brings the big guns from the likes of DBZ, Naruto, One Piece, and more.

Crackdown 3 | February 15th, 2019

Crackdown 3 has been in the works for a long time, so long in fact that it will almost be a shock to see it hitting shelves. The Xbox One console exclusive features the destruction that previous games were beloved for on a bigger scale than ever before and also a larger scale. Good things come to those who wait, so perhaps Crackdown fans will be in for a surprising treat.

Far Cry New Dawn | February 15th, 2019

Going to head-to-head with Crackdown 3 (and apparently ninety other post-apocalyptic shooters in 2019) is Far Cry New Dawn: a continuation from the events of Far Cry 5. Featuring a style that’s very difficult to disassociate with Rage 2 and a seemingly large emphasis on online play, this one’s absolutely bound to divide opinions next year — and not just because of its cover art.

Metro Exodus | February 15th, 2019

Is it now time for Metro to come crawling out of the sewers and become more than a cult franchise? Judging from Exodus, 4A Games are certainly trying to make that happen. Thanks to some gorgeous visuals, hand-crafted weapons, and a whole host of ugly things to make dead, Metro Exodus might just do enough to stand out against another post-apocalyptic shooter releasing on the same day, though it has already gone gold.

“The conclusion to Artyom’s journey has the best gameplay and most compelling story of the series, on top of incredible visual and audio presentation. It retains the series’ simplistic stealth system and falters with control, writing and dialogue issues, but even so, Metro Exodus is an odyssey worth undertaking.”
Anthem | February 22nd, 2019

It’ll be almost impossible for Anthem to fail, what with the amount of money that’s being pumped into marketing it. An open-world third-person shooter with emphasis on teamwork, BioWare’s expansive new game feels like direct competition to the likes of Destiny and The Division. We’ll wait for some more unscripted gameplay before making a call on this one, though the traversal does look pretty cool.
UPDATE: it’s kinda okay. From our Anthem review:
“Though the core gameplay loop of getting better loot will undoubtedly hook players in, Anthem currently doesn’t offer enough original content to make the investment worth it.”
Trials Rising | February 26th, 2019

Trials Rising is going to have to do some pretty spectacular things to stand out in February. By far the smallest of the big games releasing during the month, RedLynx have been listening to fan feedback about where they went wrong with Fusion. While it may appeal to fans of the series, the best call for Ubisoft at this point may be to nudge Rising into the next month’s release window.
What’s that? It has loot boxes? Oh. Oh no.

Dead or Alive 6 | March 1st, 2019

With the resurgence for fighting games of late, it should be no surprise to see Dead or Alive, everyone’s favourite jiggly fighting game, looking for a slice of the pie this year. Opinions were divided on the free-to-play direction the previous game took, so Team NINJA and Koei Tecmo have gone the full-bodied approach this time out. The jury’s out with not a huge amount being shown of the game so far, but with character customisation and sweat physics to look forward to, it’ll certainly be unique.

Devil May Cry 5 | March 8th, 2019

Dante is back, and he’s looking…really haggard? It’s lucky, then, that Nero and newcomer V will also be taking the reigs for Devil May Cry’s fifth incarnation, which ignores the events of Ninja Theory’s game. It looks as suitably bonkers as you’d expect from a DMC title with Nero travelling to Red Grave City to combat the onslaught of demons it’s facing. It looks very much like returning the series back to what people know and love it for.

The Division 2 | March 15th, 2019

Judging from first impressions alone, The Division 2 may not do enough to bring around those who left so early last time out. The human enemies are still bullet sponges and the emphasis on cover shooting returns, though there’s still time for Ubisoft to show more of the game off and entice lapsed players back in again. It’s set in Washington this time, which is absolutely not an allegory for anything, no sir.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | March 22nd, 2019

Just when you thought you could stop the self-flagellation, along comes FromSoftware. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is wrapped in fairly tight shroud of mystery, though players shouldn’t immediately be expecting a new Soulsborne. You play as a ninja in a game apparently very influenced by Tenchu with Sekiro supposedly also dropping some Soulsborne trappings to make it more of a “straight” action game. Will be very interesting to see how this unfolds.
The Walking Dead: The Final Season – Episode 4 | March 26th, 2019

The undead series about the undead has its final hurrah at the end of March with its last ever episode. It’s been a rocky road for the series over the past six months with Telltale collapsing and Skybound assuming control of the IP, so here’s hoping it manages to go out on the strongest note possible and doesn’t kill off either Clementine, AJ, or Rosie, or else there will be hell to pay.

For the first time ever, a first-party PlayStation 4 game is launching as an Early Access title. When you look at the bonkers scope of Dreams, it makes sense — there are so many spinning plates with such an ambitious game. The only real limit is your creativity as you make beautiful worlds to explore or maybe even games of your own. Dreams Early Access will go until the game is fully released; features will be continually added during this period.
Mortal Kombat 11 | April 23rd, 2019

Mortal Kombat 11 may already be the biggest fighting game that 2019 has to offer. The long-awaited return to the MK world promises a heap of ways to remove a spleen through someone’s butthole, as well as new ways to customise and make your own fighters. Announced at The Game Awards 2018, Mortal Kombat 11 will also be coming to Switch for the first time with new details to be announced in January.
Days Gone | April 26th, 2019

A PS4 exclusive with a point to prove after being somewhat left behind since it was first announced at E3 2016. Early impressions are promising for Days Gone with you travelling across an open-world crawling with “Freakers” as Deacon St. John: a biker who seems to very much blur the lines between good and bad. Featuring a huge amount of enemies on-screen at once and different routes to take to achieve your goals, Days Gone might just light up early 2019.

Rats are terrifying, especially those that like to carry around plagues like the little rascals they are. A Plague Tale: Innocence tells the story of a young sister and brother caught in the middle of a period of grand pestilence in 14th century France and looks to be a deeply emotional time. As you might expect, you’re vulnerable to not only the plague but the adults of a region that is mostly foreign to them. Expect some interesting stealthing and puzzling.

The sequel that people asked for as a half-joke but never expected to actually happen, Rage 2 looks like fixing a lot of complaints about the first game. A more direct affair, Rage 2 will allow players to unleash plenty of carnage with bananas weaponry and a plot that will actually end up somewhere this time. id Software have learned a lot from the missteps of the first game, so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Judgment | June 26th, 2019

Previously called Judge Eyes and fully aware that it’s spelled judgement wrong, Judgment from the team behind Yakuza is Phoenix Wright times a million. It even reuses a lot of Yakuza assets, but that didn’t deter Famitsu from giving it a mighty good 37 out of 40 for its release in Japan. Judgment will certainly be one of the most unique games of the year when it drops this June.

Super Mario Maker was specifically designed with Mario fanatics in mind, those who live and breathe the moustachioed one so much that they could make their own levels (without being hit with a cease and desist). Super Mario Maker 2, revealed in a February 2019 Direct, is more of the same, just this time on a platform that has a much stronger audience than the poor old Wii U. Expect to see hundreds of playthroughs of seemingly impossible levels on YouTube when this one lands this June.

If you’ve been wanting to play a new Fire Emblem on your big screen for over a decade like a lot of fans, Three Houses on Switch looks to be the franchise’s big return to console. Taking place in an academy populated by by students from three different nations who were once bitter enemies, Three Houses is almost assuredly going to be a huge and sprawling JRPG when it lands this July.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood | July 26th, 2019

Youngblood will be the first co-op sojourn in the Wolfenstein franchise and will feature BJ’s two badass daughters trying to track him down after he goes missing. It looks as bombastic as you’d expect from a Wolfenstein game and promises to be more open than any other game in the series to date. Your friend can also play with you for free if you purchase a Buddy Pass, not unlike A Way Out except not free. As a nice surprise, it lands on Switch on the same day as all the other platforms.

This Switch exclusive came out of totally nowhere during the February 2019 Direct and might have just stolen the whole show. A hugely stylistic actioner from the wonderful weirdos over at Platinum, Astral Chain sees you playing as a member of a special police force who teams up with sentient weapon to beat the evil out of monsters. It’s quintessential Platinum, who previously worked on NieR and Metal Gear Rising and are also working on Bayonetta 3 for Switch, and many can’t wait for it.

Gears 5 | September 10th, 2019

Gears of War 4 was a solid but unspectacular entry into the franchise, which means that The Koalition may have to go all out with Gears (no “of War”) 5. It doesn’t look like reinventing the wheel from what we’ve seen so far, though it focuses on a non-Fenix for the first time in a long time. You play as Kait as she travels across the “biggest Gears world” to date to discover the origins of the Locust. Expect surprising emotion.
Borderlands 3 | September 13th, 2019

God bless Borderlands 3 for finally giving us a game to put in our September section. Revealed during a special livestream after endless teasing, Borderlands 3 is looking like the wildest game in the series to date with multiple planets and vaults to explore and a new cast of bad guys to take on, as well as returning favourites — even Rhys from Tales From The Borderlands is included. The only downside? Those who hate the Epic Games Store are out of luck for at least six months after launch.
The Surge 2 | September 24th, 2019

While maybe not a 2019 game at the top of many wishlists, The Surge 2 is still going to scratch an itch for some this September. A follow-up to the cult favourite, it looks like offering the same frustratingly fun Souls-like gameplay as the first with a nice dash of dystopia. The Surge had plenty of plaudits, but its detractors will be hoping for a bit more finesse this time out — the first just couldn’t match Miyazaki’s special brand of masochism.

We’ve played the vampiric Code Vein, and yep: it’s very much like a Souls game. That basically entails punishing difficulty, big and impossibly grotesque bosses, and a low amount of hand-holding. However, Code Vein distances itself from the likes of The Surge and Nioh by being less of a solitary experience — your AI buddy can lend a helping hand.

Concrete Genie | October 9th, 2019

Alongside Dreams, this could be one of the best PS4 games going in terms of affording the player huge amounts of creativity. Concrete Genie utilises the DualShock to allow you to paint some stunning canvases and bring creatures to life in a town corrupted by pollution. We’ve only seen glimpses of it, but what’s on offer has been damn pretty so far.
Medievil | October 25th, 2019

Originally scheduled to release in 2018, the PS4 Medievil remake was AWOL for the longest time before its inevitable delay was announced. A from scratch remake, what we’ve seen of the project so far looks promising and like it’s carrying over the spirit of the original game, just with far more polygons to play with it. If we were betting birds, we’d say this one will be a nice little trip back in time.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare | October 25th, 2019

A reboot of the original trilogy, Modern Warfare represents a pretty significant roll of the dice from Activision, who seem to have given up on giving up single-player after just one year. Modern Warfare retcons the first game from the PS3 and 360 while also introducing cross-play and a distinct lack of a dreaded season pass. There’s always a catch, so beware of COD Points out of the ears for this one.

Death Stranding | November 8th

The video game equivalent of the word “huh”, Death Stranding is looking like being one of the weirdest big-budget games ever made. When devastating rain turns the world to shit, you must play as a courier and deliver stuff (?) while warding off an unusual threat. At least that’s what we think is going to happen? Kojima’s creativity has been let loose on this one, so it will be a real trip if nothing else and undoubtedly one of the biggest new games of 2019 — even if we don’t know what the hell is going on. Seriously, we get more confused with each new trailer for this.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order | November 15th, 2019

A single-player Star Wars game with no microtransactions or loot box nonsense? Are we dreaming? And how annoyed must Amy Hennig be about now? After previously saying that they were pivoting away from a single-player Star Wars title, EA revealed…a single-player Star Wars title. Set in the period between Episode III and IV with the Jedi on the verge of extinction, Fallen Order is a third-person action game that looks like it will be very open. Respawn are developing this one, so expect some pretty wild things. Main character Cal Kestis is played by Cameron Monaghan, who is on the run from the Empire.
Pokémon Sword and Shield | November 15th, 2019

The full-fat RPG that may satisfy those left disappointed by Let’s GO!, Pokémon Sword and Shield is to due to launch as a Switch exclusive sometime later this year. We know that Galar is heavily inspired by Britain (have seen zero fish and chips so far, mind) and the three starter Pokémon are all worth throwing yourself in front of a bullet for, along with a tonne of other wild new changes to the regular experience. It’s definitely going to be a ride.
Shenmue 3 | November 19th, 2019

What harm’s a little more waiting going to do, right? Shenmue fans have been waiting for nearly two decades for a new entry in the series and Shenmue 3 certainly looks like delivering just that, for better and worse. Based on very early impressions, it will keep a lot of the “quirky” DNA of its predecessors intact and also apparently the character models. Verdicts on the visuals so far have been split, so here’s hoping the developers take the time to find a middle ground.

DOOM Eternal | November 22nd, 2019

More of the same, please and thank you. DOOM Eternal picks up from where the 2016 entry left off with Doomguy fighting his way through Hell on Earth. Drawing heavily from DOOM II, Eternal will gives players a big arsenal than ever (including a harpoon) and also introduces the ability for players to join your game, not unlike that game that you’re never allowed to compare anything to because it’s rote.

One of the most mysterious new games of 2019, next to nothing is known about Babylon’s Fall. Judging from its teaser trailer, we at least know that it isn’t a sequel to the PS2 classic football game Red Card — probably. PlatinumGames are behind this one, so expect the minds behind NieR, Metal Gear Rising, Vanquish, and many more to bring it, no matter what it is.

Prepare to cry. The Blind Forest was one of the most heart-wrenching games of its ilk when it first launched, coupled with its Metroidvania leanings making it one of the most beloved games of 2015. With the adventure seemingly being even more harrowing and its visuals somehow even more beautiful, The Will of the Wisps is sure to win some hearts when it lands in early 2020.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot | Early 2020

Following the huge success of FighterZ, Bandai Namco will be hoping they can strike gold again with Project Z: an as yet unofficially named action RPG set in the DBZ universe that follows Goku’s journey throughout the show. Despite being out this year, Bandai Namco have been rather coy on what to expect from this one, though you can expect balls of many varieties and Krillin to die once or twice before the game is over.
Halo Infinite | Holiday 2020

Microsoft are keeping quiet on what is, for all intents and purposes, Halo 6. The early tease for the game seems to suggest that Halo Infinite will be a bold new direction for the franchise, which could entail an open world or possibly something else entirely. Master Chief will be involved, so the sins of Halo 5 and its disappointing rivalry might be able to be forgiven by the time Infinite rolls around.

Black Flag was such a good idea that Ubisoft decided to spin off its seafaring into its own game. Skull & Bones looks like one of Ubisoft’s most promising games in a long time, even if it is “live service”. You’ll constantly be sailing and exploring, coming across other players and deciding whether to make friends or cannon the everloving heck out of each other. We all know it’s going to be the latter.

A PS4 exclusive with a captivating aesthetic and more deliberate approach to combat, Ghost of Tsushima is the next game from the developers of the inFamous series. An open world game, Tsushima will allow players to use stealth or outright brutality to take on the hordes of Mongolians invading Japan. Harness the power of the Ghost and find a way to save your country when this one lands in the near future.
The Last of Us: Part II | TBC

The second The Last of Us game looks to somehow be even more of a gut-punch than before. Featuring even more scarily realistic visuals and brutality, everything we’ve seen of TLOU 2 so far seems to suggest that Ellie is out for revenge and will stop at nothing to enact just that. On who and why is yet to be revealed, neither is the location of Joel. He’s alive, right? Naughty Dog? Hello?
Bayonetta 3 | TBC

Not much is known about Bayonetta 3 at this point, other than that you will be kicking endless brigades of asses and looking great while doing so. Platinum Games and Nintendo continue their collaboration on the Bayonetta series after the second entry released as a Wii U exclusive and with the Switch already being many more times successful than the doomed console, Bayonetta 3 may actually receive the audience it deserves.
Metroid Prime 4 | TBC

We know less about Metroid Prime 4 than arguably any upcoming game, just because there is nothing to know beyond the simplest of details. Metroid Prime 4 is the fourth game in the Prime series and is coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch. That’s your lot. On you go. It will almost definitely be better than Federation Force as it would have to actively be trying not to be, after all.
The Elder Scrolls VI | TBC

Some mountains and a lovely horizon were all that was needed to send the internet into a frenzy. The Elder Scrolls VI is currently in development, but that doesn’t mean it will be out in 2019, 2020, 2021, or maybe even later — these things take a day and age. Single-player RPGs are still a huge market to tap into, though you won’t see the new TES games in this generation.
Starfield | TBC

You can copy almost verbatim what we wrote above and intersperse the words “sci-fi” and “spaceship” instead. Starfield is the first brand new Bethesda IP in decades and will take the trappings of the likes of TES and Fallout to space. Again, don’t expect this any time soon whatsoever.
