Here’s what you say when you catch the Gar in New Horizons:
“I caught a gar! Yar! It’s a gar! Har har!“
The Gar is a very long fish with black and somewhat brown patterns on its scales.
Gar Location, Time of Day & Size
The Gar is one of the only new fish that doesn’t spawn in a river or sea that can be caught from June 1st. It’s located in the ponds on your island , and is one of many high value fish that can be found for the summer season.
It casts a huge shadow and can be found swimming from 4PM-9AM every day in your ponds. You can easily make a pond in New Horizons if you have the terraforming skill unlocked.
It’s relatively rare, though you can always craft some bait and chuck it into a pond to increase the chances of a spawn. Repeat this process until one eventually appears. It stands out as the biggest fish available in a pond, so you should immediately recognise a Gar spawn.
Gar Blathers Donation
Here’s what Blathers has to tell you about the Gar when you go to donate it:
“Hoo hoo! So you have snagged a gar. Did you know this beastly fish can grow up to nine feet long? Indeed, the gar is a remnant of times long past—a living fossil, if you will. It not only has sharp teeth and armor-like scales…it has the ability to take breaths of air as well! Ah, to look upon this unusual fish is to get a glimpse of our prehistoric past.””
The Gar in New Horizons will fetch you 6,000 Bells when sold to Nook’s Cranny. This makes it one of the most valuable fish you can catch from a pond in the whole game.
You can also hold onto it until C.J. comes to your island, who will buy it for 33% more than usual for 9,000 Bells.
When Is The Gar Available Until?
You have plenty of opportunities to catch the Gar in New Horizons, it spawning from June 1st until September 30th.
This means you will almost definitely encounter at least one Gar across those months if you play daily, but don’t forget there’s always the option of utilising time travel to go to an exact date and time in New Horizons if you miss out.
The Gar is one of 80 fish in total in New Horizons to catch if you want to unlock the Golden Fishing Rod.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is out now exclusively for Switch, is so fun that it will make you say this game Gar sick. From our review:
“New Horizons is a great continuation of an already fantastic series of games, and paying back Tom Nook’s loan has never been so fun.”
