Resident Evil 7 documentary

Even with a tide of negativity coming their way over the change from third-person to first-person, it not having any familiar characters(ish), and being independent from almost anything in the established canon, Capcom managed to make Resident Evil 7 a success.

Released in January and already surely on many GOTY 2017 shortlists, Resident Evil 7 brought the terror back to a franchise that many felt had lost its way. Reviews have been glowing and fan reception has been largely positive, though the game is still not quite done – Not A Hero, a free DLC, will release soon and feature Chris Redfield.

In the first of a series of documentaries called Making of Resident Evil 7 biohazard , Capcom are looking back at the origins of Resident Evil 7 and how it came to be. There’s a lot to dig into in Part One: Beginning Hours.

Featuring interviews with Jun Takeuchi (Executive Producer), Masachika Kawata (Producer) and Koshi Nakanishi (Director), it’s a fascinating insight into how the game came to be, how it was decided early to take it back to its survival horror roots. Interestingly, Evil Dead was used as inspiration, something that you can clearly see as you attempt to survive the claustrophobic Baker estate.

Another cool takeaway was an early idea of the sort of style the game would be in the form of a CG movie. Apparently, it was supposed to show the style off without feeling completely like a Resident Evil game to see if the “hybrid” style of new and old would work.

The next entries in the documentary series aren’t too far behind and will focus on bringing the storyline to life, the setting, and they made its VR one of the best examples out there.
