Netflix Leads in Golden Globe Nominations

Streaming platforms like Amazon and Hulu also picked up a decent amount of nominations.

Netflix Golden Globe Nominations for TV and Film

The Golden Globes nominations have been released, and Netflix has done well for itself, scoring an astounding 42 nominations across the film and TV categories.

Leading the film nomination pool is David Fincher’s Mank, which racked up 6 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director nomination for Fincher, and Best Actor for Gary Oldman. As for TV, we have The Crown, which scored nominations for best TV drama, with cast members like Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin receiving acting nominations for their portrayals of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana, respectively.

Netflix also received nominations for Ryan Murphy’s The Prom, Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 and the hugely popular TV limited series The Queen’s Gambit.

While Netflix is clearly in the lead, other streaming platforms have performed decently as well. Amazon received 10 nominations, which includes the likes of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and its Small Axe anthology series. Hulu snagged 10 nods as well, where films like Palm Springs and Ramy were nominated.

It is no surprise that streaming platforms are leading the charge in awards season this year, since the coronavirus put a damper on movie studios’ plans, with a large bulk of movies being delayed in 2020.

It’s also a landmark year for female directors, with Regina King, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell scoring nominations for their respective films. They join a very small group of female directors who have received this distinction, that of Barbra Streisand, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Ava DuVernay and Kathryn Bigelow.
