There are many ways of getting food in Sons of the Forest, and not all of them involve hunting down all the seagulls who stupidly seem to land at your feet. Fishing is an important part of play in Sons of the Forest, but it’s not exactly clear how you can go about it from the off. There are actually two main methods of fishing.
The first and most obvious is to build a Fish Trap, which cost 25x Sticks. Press B (and X if you need to switch mode and move your book to the left), then select traps and find the Fish Trap.
The best place to to put a Fish Trap is somewhere that you already know that fish spawn, as you can’t just put it in any body of water. Fish don’t seem to spawn all that often in lakes and rivers, but we’ve found them often in the sea, typically in the shallow waters where you can still stand just before the water breaks out into the wide ocean.
It’s highly recommended that you build a few fish traps and have them spread out across the island so you aren’t depending on a single source. Be sure to check them every day to see if they’ve snagged any fish; if a particular trap hasn’t caught anything in a few days, it means no fish spawn there.
The second way to catch fish is to craft a Spear. You will need x2 Sticks, 1x Duct Tape, and your Tactical Knife. Press I, right click each item, then select the gear icon to combine them all and craft a Spear.
As for how to actually use a Spear to catch fish, press I to go into your inventory then left click to equip it. Go into a shallow body of water (or wait near the water’s edge) where you know fish spawn (shallow sea water is again a good bet), then look down and your character should enter a new animation and hold the Spear up.
Once you see a fish swimming near you, left click to spear and catch it. Be very still and patient when near fish, as you can easily spook them.
And while you don’t technically catch them yourself, Virginia is able to gift you fish on occasion once you’ve befriended her.
When you’ve caught fish, you can cook them as normal for a quick bite, but we’d recommend that you dry them for a longer lasting meal. As of the first build at Early Access launch, there doesn’t seem to specific types of fish in Sons of the Forest, just generic fish.
