Rick And Morty Drops Fifth Season Trailer

The show about the alcoholic and his grandson getting into all sorts of scrapes is coming back.

Self-described ‘high-concept sci-fi rigmarole’ cartoon Rick and Morty has released the trailer for its fifth season – which is to premiere June 20th, which by its own lackadaisical release schedule is lightning-fast, barely more than a year since the last lot. The fans have calmed down a bit since the height of Mortymania, but will still be very pleased.

You can find the trailer below:

Particularly notable in the trailer is the nods to Clive Barker’s Hellraiser – although such specific lampoons tend to be self-limiting. Even with only four seasons under its belt, Rick and Morty has demonstrated this already. In the second season, its spoof of The Purge barely had enough material to fill the twenty minutes, while the third season’s ‘Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender’ was far more robust: it was broad enough that it could have been poking fun at The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, or any of the various superhero ensemble franchises, and as such didn’t rely on its audience being familiar with any one original. Suffice it to say, a cult, low-budget splatterfest from 1987 is an odd choice for that.

Speaking of splatterfests, the fourth and most recent season of Rick and Morty had a few tonally jarring moments where they turned up the gore – having a character holding on to jagged metal, etc. – and Justin Roiland’s shamelessly similar Solar Opposites made things unusually gory throughout. Now, doing Hellraiser, they have little option but to make things legitimately gruesome. I reserve judgement on this decision, merely mentioning it to point out that these are meant to be comedies.
