After days of excitement spurred on by Season 12’s launch trailer and the latest episode of Stories from the Outlands, Apex Legends fans have finally had a glimpse of next season’s game changes with the release of the Defiance gameplay trailer. Read on to discover the many changes coming in Season 12.

Olympus Map Changes

The trailer revealed many interesting details, including a look at the wreckage of the once-pristine Olympus map, which was nearly destroyed by Octane’s father in last week’s launch trailer. Many structures appear to be trapped in the void, and at least one of the massive red balloons keeping the city afloat is gone.

Maggie: A New Legend Arrives

Of course, no Apex gameplay trailer would be complete without giving the newest Legend her time in the limelight. Players got a good look at how Mad Maggie will really operate inside the Ring, and her combat style is just as vicious as she is. More details about her abilities will be released in the upcoming “Meet Maggie” trailer.

New Battle Pass

The gameplay trailer doesn’t give away too much about Season 12’s Battle Pass, but it does show off a Loba cosmetic skin that will be included in the Defiance Battle Pass. More info about the Battle Pass will be released when the Battle Pass trailer launches later this week.

Control LTM

The most hype is definitely centered around Control, a new limited-time mode that will be active for the first three weeks of Season 12, starting February 8th and ending on March 1st, 2022. Sponsored by Octane’s dad, this mode will pit two teams of nine Legends against each other on unique maps, with the goal of holding a series of Control Zones. Players rack up points for each second they manage to hold down a Zone. The first team to reach 1,250 points wins.

But Control isn’t just about controlling Zones – the new mode also allows players to have more control over their gameplay style more than ever before. Similar to the yearly Winter Express LTM, Control gives players the option to switch to a different Legend or weapon loadout each time they die.

After death, players quickly respawn and are allowed to choose which of the three Control Zones they wish to respawn at. Additionally, there is no limit on respawns, allowing for more aggressive, fast-paced tactics with less risk than other game modes.

More details about Control can be found on EA’s official Apex Legends site.

Apex Legends 3rd Anniversary Celebration

Apex is turning 3 this year, and the Legends are throwing themselves the biggest birthday bash yet – a three-week event that rewards players with a new set of prizes every week, just for logging in. A full breakdown of Apex’s 3rd Anniversary prizes can be found here, but suffice it to say that Legends will come away from this birthday with the best swag bag ever.

Apex Legends 3rd Anniversary Collection Event

Apex’s Birthday Celebration doesn’t stop there – the Anniversary Collection Event will also launch alongside Season 12, allowing players a chance to snag some sweet cosmetic skins that match several different pre-existing evergreen cosmetic skins, like Crypto’s “Hype Beast”, Loba’s “Purple Reign” and Fuse’s “Dread Captain”. Skins from the Monsters Within and Dark Depths events joined the pool of permanently-available “evergreen” skins after their collection events ended, but it’s unclear if the 3rd Anniversary skins will follow suit, so it may be wise to grab them while you have the chance.

Apex Legends’ 12th season, Defiance, will launch on February 8th, 2022.

Apex Legends is free to play on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
