Total War: Warhammer 3’s campaigns feature a flexible difficulty system that affects both the strategic and tactical layers separately. Here’s how you can change the difficulty to best suit your playstyle and desired challenge level.

To change both the campaign and battle difficulty, players will first need to start a new campaign by clicking the New Campaign button, watching and/or skipping any cutscenes, and then choosing one of the eight available factions in the faction selection screen. Once you have selected and confirmed your faction you will next be greeted by the Legendary Lord selection screen.

On this screen, there’s a Change Difficulty button at the bottom left of the screen, as well as two indicators for the current set difficulty levels. Click the Change Difficulty button to open a menu, which will have two columns: the left for campaign difficulty and the right for tactical real-time battles. You may now select any difficulty level of your choosing.

If you would like to modify the difficulty in the middle of a campaign, press the Esc key to reach the in-game menu and click on the double gears icon for Game Settings. On the third column from the left, players will notice two sliders, one for campaign difficulty at the top and one for battle difficulty at the bottom. You may notice that you are unable to push the campaign slider to Legendary as that can only be set in the campaign setup screen.

Campaign difficulty will range from Easy to Legendary. The difficulty level will primarily affect the number of resource bonuses and strategic cheats the AI will get. This will, in turn, affect the AI’s aggression towards the player. Legendary difficulty also has additional changes in that it will disable manual saving, as well as prevent players from pausing in combat, takeaway the minimap, and place minor limitations on camera movement and positioning.

Battle difficulty affects unit stat bonuses the AI forces will get. On higher challenge levels, normally weaker low-tier units for the AI will outperform their vanilla versions.

Feel free to experiment with the combination of challenge levels to tailor the game flow to fit your needs. Normal or Hard is a great starting point for beginners to get familiar with Total War’s systems, while Very Hard and Legendary will test the player’s ability to optimize their decision-making and ability to counter a cheating AI.
