The Big Con: How To Complete The Shoe Questline

What are those?!

The Big Con

A secret questline in The Big Con concerns a pair of rare shoes, an almost shadowy cabal of collectors (well, two collectors) and the chance to swindle some idiots out of thousands of dollars. However, because it’s a secret questline, some players might not know how to trigger these events. Here’s everything you need to know about the Shoe questline in The Big Con.

In order to trigger the quest, you need to open a suitcase in the first level that’s located in an alleyway next to Ali’s video store. The code for the suitcase is tricky to find, so tricky in fact that I don’t actually know how you’re meant to find it out.

The code is 4-5-2, and the method I used revolved around trial and error. There are four total shops in the town’s square, there’s also a mural with five items on it and the alleyway containing the suitcase is next to a shop called Two Scoops. That could be the solution, or it could be entirely coincidental. I’m not sure. If there’s a better way of solving this, we’ll let you know.

Once you’ve opened the suitcase, you’ll be instructed via a note to make a phone call, but the only time you can do that is at the mall, which is the next level. When making the call at the payphone, you’ll be asked the question of “Have you seen the shoes?”, to which you need to respond “The shoes fly like eagles at midnight.”

During that phone call, the mysterious caller will tell you to board the train to Las Venganza, take some shoe polish from the first class carriage and deliver it into a bin in the storage carriage at the back of the train. You’ll need to pay a train employee $50 in order to access the back of the train, but that shouldn’t be an issue. Once completed, you’ll be told to head to the pool hall in Las Venganza and find someone in a white undershirt.

The pool hall is in the southwest corner of the map, very near to where you first spawn when you arrive in the level, and the man in the white undershirt will give you one final assignment: his ex-partner is staying in a hotel a few streets over (it’s the furthest east on the map), and they both own the only two pairs of a limited set of shoes. He wants you to steal the shoes, deliver them to him so he can destroy them and become the sole owner. How sole-less. However, when leaving, his partner will stop you outside the bar and ask you to betray the man, steal his shoes and deliver them to her.

While this sounds like the premise for a decent moral conundrum, you can actually play both sides against each other by stealing both pairs of shoes and delivering them to the other person. You only need to deliver one pair of shoes in order to complete the quest and earn the 200G achievement, but delivering both nets you more money and is kind of funnier, honestly.
