The year ahead is shaping up to one of the most interesting in gaming history for a lot of reasons. Not only are there now two new consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (three if you count the S separately), but real world problems might have impacted a lot of new games. In fact, a lot of the news games of 2021 were slated for the year prior before delays pushed them back.
With that in mind, let’s put together a comprehensive release schedule for everything launching this year, whether that’s PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, or Switch. As a lot of these games are cross-gen titles, you won’t find many PS5 exclusives or Xbox exclusives, though that just means that more people can play them than ever.
Below you can find an index by month of all the new games coming out over the next year; those scheduled to drop in 2021 without a concrete release date can be found in the TBC section. We’ll be updating this with new upcoming games of 2021 as they are announced.

Nothing much has been overhauled from the two most recent Hitman games, but with those belonging right at the top of the stealth genre, no huge renovations were necessary. Destruction Allstars | February 2nd, 2021

Developer: Lucid Games, Wushsu Studios
Publisher: SIE
Platform(s): PS5
Originally slated to launch alongside the new console itself, this PS5 exclusive was instead pushed back into its February 2021 slot and also as part of PlayStation Plus, meaning that it’s “free” for millions from day one. But what is it? Well, it’s a vehicular combat multiplayer game that’s a lot like if Twisted Metal was made by Pixar thanks to the ridiculous weapons and generally slapstick nature. It might not be revolutionary or keep your attention for months, but does it have to be?
Little Nightmares 2 | February 11th, 2021

Developer: Tarsier
Publisher: Bandai Namco
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1, Switch
The long in the making sequel to the cult hit of 2017, Little Nightmares 2 puts you in the ever so tiny shoes of Mono as he travels with Six to discover the truth behind The Signal Tower. Expect some disturbing sights without the gore if the first game is anything to go by, which you really ought to have played if you haven’t already. While you could likely get away with not playing it or its DLC ahead of the sequel, the weird world of Little Nightmares is worth diving into wherever you can.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury | February 12th, 2021

Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform(s): Switch
As part of Mario’s 35th Anniversary and following the release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars back in September, Nintendo continued the celebrations and decided to treat fans with the upcoming release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. This enhanced port includes the full Wii U game, with updated controls for the Switch, as well as Bowser’s Fury, its until now unreleased expansion that we still don’t know much about. Let’s wait and see then what Nintendo has prepared since now the cat’s out of the bag (Mario’s special costume is a kitty cat in this one).
Bravely Default 2 | February 26th, 2021

Developer: Square Enix
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform: Switch
The Bravely series started on the Nintendo 3DS and is about to make the transition to the Switch. Bravely Default 2 is a turn-based RPG and quite old-school in its approach. The player traverses the overworld from an overhead view, exploring the landscape and engaging in battles with various types of monsters. What we don’t know though is how jobs will work in this entry, as the previous games in the series, Bravely Default and Bravely Second, featured a vast and kind of complicated Job system.

Developer: Ubisoft

Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1, Switch
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is, funnily enough, a remake of the cult classic from the PS2 era that had just about one of the least convincing reveals ever. Still, they’ve had plenty of time to up their game since then and with this remake promising to update the controls and modernise the visuals, it should hopefully bring a tonne of new players over to the franchise.

The recipe is familiar for returning hunters: kill the monster, collect the materials, craft new weapons and repeat. This time, though, Monster Hunter Rise will transport players to the colorful Kamura village, a new serene mountain that attracts visitors with its culture and innovative hunting technology. Close by, the new hunting grounds await, including the Ancient Shrine ruins where even bigger monsters roam. A new feature of Monster Hunter Rise is the inclusion of rideable companions, in other words mounts, that will offer a new set of attack options. Good stuff then.
It Takes Two | March 26th, 2021

Developer: Hazerlight
Publisher: Electronics Arts
Platform(s): PC, PS5, PS4, XSXS, XB1, Switch
It Takes Two, coming from the director of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and A Way Out, is a new cooperative platformer that focuses more on replayable challenges than a single-run campaign. And to emphasize on that co-operative nature even more, Hazelight gift a free Friend’s Pass with each purchase, which can be passed to a friend to join in. Sounds like the perfect couch co-op game?

Within each of these eras, strategy maniacs can pick one of the ten civilization types, which are based on historical societies, and receive bonuses or penalties. NieR Replicant | April 23rd, 2021

A decade after the original release of NieR Automata on the PS3 and X360, its upgraded sequel, previously released only in Japan, is set to roll out as a swan song to the eighth generation of video game consoles. It’s worth mentioning also that Nier Replicant is more than a remaster as it features new characters, improved gameplay and new story elements. In other words, it aims to make everything more polished and modern than in the original game. It has also been confirmed that staff members from PlatinumGames, creators of the sequel Nier: Automata and Bayonetta hack and slash series, are on board.

Resident Evil Village is the upcoming latest entry and the tenth major installment in the said series. It is a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard with previous protagonist Ethan returning. The game is going to again adopt a first-person view and is based in some kind of village reminiscent of the British countryside in which cults and the occult prevail. And werewolves. God of War Ragnarok | TBC 2021

Developer: Santa Monica Studio
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Platform (s): PS5
God of War Ragnarok could easily win the title of the most anticipated video game of 2021. Although officially unnamed, this newer entry in the popular hack and slash series will have Kratos keep slaughtering beasts based in Norse mythology and journey through Scandinavian settings. The game is set to release sometime later this year, though it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it get delayed to later.
Horizon Forbidden West | TBC 2021

Developer: Guerrilla Games
Producer: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Platform(s): PS5, PS4
A PlayStation exclusive, Horizon Forbidden West is an epic third-person action RPG adventure with an expansive open world and crystal clear graphics. Lush forests, sunken cities and towering mountains of a post-apocalyptic America eagerly wait to be explored by players who will also have to engage in battles against gigantic machines. As a sequel to the critically acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn, expectations for Horizon Forbidden West are relatively high as is also the addition of underwater exploration.
Far Cry 6 | TBC 2021

Developer: Ubisoft Toronto
Producer: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, PS5, PS4, XSXS, Xbox One
The Far Cry series is among the most recognizable video game franchises that has ever been created. They combine fine first-person shooting with the thrill of surviving in a foreign environment, and overcoming some tyrannical regime. Far Cry 6 is no exception as players follow local Dani and fight using guerrilla tactics and weaponry to liberate the nation of Yara. The game was scheduled to be released this February but Ubisoft decided to delay it. It will most definitely hit the shelves sometime this year, though.
Halo Infinite | TBC 2021
Developer: 343 Industries
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Platform(s): PC, XB1, Xbox 4
There’s a lot riding on Halo Infinite. Not only does it have to get the Halo series back on track after the disappointment of Halo 5, but it also has to prop up the appeal of the new Xbox console when it launches. We’ve not seen any gameplay of it at this time of writing, but it shouldn’t be too long until we get to see Chief in action again.
Psychonauts 2 | TBC 2021
Developer: Double Fine
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
Psychonauts 2, the sequel to the PS2 era cult classic, has been knocking around for nearly half a decade now, it receiving two delays after successful crowdfunding. With Microsoft now in control of Double Fine, here’s hoping they can finally steer it into our hands. Interesting side note: Microsoft will be publishing the game on PS4.
No More Heroes 3 | TBC 2021
Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture
Publisher: Marvelous
Platform(s): Switch
Following the success of a small scale spin off, No More Heroes 3 was confirmed exclusively for the Switch; NMH had its start on Nintendo’s consoles. If you’ve never played a game in the series before, expect some absolutely manic action and enough buckets of blood to make a vampire squeamish. Though not yet confirmed, the threequel may also return to open world.
Riders Republic | TBC 2021

Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, PS5, XSXS, PS4, XB1, Stadia
Remember Steep? Well, Ubisoft hope you don’t as Riders Republic looks very much like its not very distant cousin. Swap the icy mountains of Steep for the sandy wilderness and you have Riders Republic, which looks like a live service game if ever we’ve seen one. Featuring mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, wingsuit flying, and rocket wingsuiting (wow, yes please), Riders Republic sees over fifty players racing each other at once in its next gen versions. Time will tell if it sticks in the memory a little better than, erm, Steep. Yep, that one.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 | TBC 2021
Developer: Black Forest Games GmbH
Publisher: THQ Nordic
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
It was certainly a surprise to see Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 pop up, especially as the original game was only ever a cult game. It was so underappreciated, in fact, that it was the last thing its developer did before it went out of business. Bloodlines 2 has the intricacies of that classic RPG in a modern, bloodthirsty package, topped off with some sumptuous visuals. To avoid the mistakes of the first game, it received a small delay to make sure it was the best it could be.
Rainbow Six Quarantine | TBC 2021
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1, PS5, Xbox 4
Everybody loved the limited time mode introduced to Siege that turned it into a PVE experience similar to Left 4 Dead, so much so that Ubisoft have spun it off into its own game. Previously scheduled for a tentative 2020 but was one of three games to get pushed back at once because of the poor response of Breakpoint.
Skull & Bones | TBC
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
Ubisoft’s periodically delayed pirate simulator has had a staccato development since it was announced, it falling off the map multiple times and generally not capturing many headlines. With its most recent delay, Skull & Bones will have even more time to make it stand out amongst the crowd.
Bayonetta 3 | TBC
Developer: Platinum Games
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform(s): Switch
Not much is known about Bayonetta 3, other than that it will be exclusive to the Switch and will feature a nice witch. Based on previous games in the franchise, you can expect some absolutely absurd action and a killer soundtrack to match. No release date or gameplay for this one yet.
Babylon’s Fall | TBC
Developer: PlatinumGames
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform(s): PC, PS4
At this time of writing, Babylon’s Fall was pencilled in for a 2019 release after a very brief showing at E3 2018, but nothing has come of it yet. In fact, word on Babylon’s Fall has been very hard to come by in general, with just a quick showing during a State of Play. Perhaps Platinum are spread too thinly with many projects on the go at once, but there’s every chance we will see the game in 2020.
Dying Light 2 | TBC
Developer: Techland
Publisher: Techland Publishing
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
A hugely ambitious sequel to one of the most underrated open world games of all time, Dying Light 2 will feature a world that reacts to your choices alongside the parkour of the original game and zombie-killing action. Dying Light 2 features quite the pedigree in the writing department, and if it’s supported half as well post-launch as the original game, we’ll be in for a treat, though we may be waiting for a long while after a huge delay.
Metroid Prime 4 | TBC
Developer: Nintendo/Retro Studios
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform(s): Switch
We didn’t see anything of Metroid Prime 4 for a long time and then it was announced that it would be receiving a pretty hefty delay with a change in developer. Even still, Nintendo are angling for an early 2021 release for this one. We just thought we’d put it here to remind you.
