During the company’s N7 Day announcements, Bioware revealed that Loyalty Missions would make a return. In Mass Effect 2, Shepard could interact with his squadmates and learn more about their past, opening up missions which made them loyal, increasing their survival odds in the later suicide mission.

Due to the grander scale of Mass Effect 3, the game didn’t feature loyalty missions, and some fans felt that they were missing.

“I loved the loyalty missions,” the franchise’s creative director Mac Walters told Game Informer. “As a writer, one of the things I loved was the freedom to say ‘I know this character is coming along,’ so they can carry a lot of the narrative. That made my job easier, but it also made it more fun, because I could tell a more specific story in one of those missions.”

However, Walters was also quick to point out that these missions would be entirely optional, unlike ME2 where ignoring them could spell doom for your squadmates.

Walters said: “the big difference between this and ME2, where you did a loyalty mission and that all impacted the ending, is that they’re much more optional in this case.

“If you don’t want to engage with them, you don’t have to. If you want engage with them after the critical path is done, you can do that.”

The game also has a variety of side missions that players can pursue, including exploration activities and solving the mystery surrounding the Ryder family.
