Fans of the Kingdom Hearts series have been waiting for the third entry in the franchise for ages. We’ve seen ten releases and re-releases in the series since Kingdom Hearts II came out whole thirteen years ago. Hell, even the 1.5 and 2.5 re-releases were re-released in a collection. The most recent entry was the 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, which contained a re-release of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, a short episode called Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage, taking place directly after Dream Drop Distance, and a 60 cinematic film that shows events around the mobile game prequel.

Kingdom Hearts 3 has been teased for a while, with short videos and little bits of information about the game being drip fed to us from Square Enix. Each video has looked better than the last, so it’s no surprise that fans feel cheated every time the game is delayed.

It’s time to take a look at everything we know so far.

What is Kingdom Hearts III’s release date?

Last year at D23, Square Enix and Disney announced that the game will be releasing in 2018, however with the track record that Kingdom Hearts III has, that’s almost hard to believe. However, it’s now 2018 and we still haven’t gotten any news from Square Enix and Disney about the game being delayed, so we can only hope the game is still on track to that 2018 release date.

Most likely we’ll be given a more exact release date either at E3 2018 or at D23 2018, which takes place in Japan this year.

Where can I play Kingdom Hearts III?

Kingdom Hearts 3 5

You’ll be able to play it on PS4 and Xbox One. Some are hoping that you might be able to play it on the Nintendo Switch, however nothing has been announced yet on that front, despite D23 last year taking place after the official release on the Switch. It’s been in development for so long that porting it at such short notice is probably not a good idea.

What genre does Kingdom Hearts III belong to?

Kingdom Hearts 3 4

Just like most of the other games in the series, Kingdom Hearts III is an action role-playing game. We might see some changes in the beloved Kingdom Hearts formula, but these will probably be announced when we get more information about the game.

Kingdom Hearts III synopsis

After setting off on his new journey in Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage-, Sora, Donald, and Goofy will attempt to search for seven guardians of light and the “Key to Return Hearts”, while King Mickey and Riku search for previous Keyblade wielders in an attempt to stop Master Xehanort’s plan to balance the light and darkness, which will ultimately lead to the final showdown between Sora and Master Xehanort. By the start of the game, Sora has completed his Mark of Mastery, which he was attempting to do at the end of Dream Drop Distance.

What’s New?

Kingdom Hearts 3 2

Kingdom Hearts III will be a mix of the Kingdom Hearts II gameplay fans are used to and new elements. Some of the new elements include the Flowchain and Attraction Flow systems, the former letting you move almost as freely as in Dream Drop Distance, the second giving you the opportunity to land hard-hitting attacks on enemies that are based on Disney rides. You won’t get to choose which one you use, that’s based on the location.

For the first time ever, fans will get to play in a Toy Story World, a Big Hero 6 World and a Tangled World, with more worlds to be announced!

Some fans were also surprised about Sora using weapons other than the typical keyblades, however, as it turns out, Sora now has the power to transform keyblades into other forms, with each keyblade having its own two special forms it can turn into.
