Facebook Gaming Won’t Replace Mixer On The Xbox Dashboard

The gap won't be plugged just yet.

Mixer

On Monday, it was announced that Microsoft’s own streaming platform Mixer would be closing its doors, much to the surprise of the company’s own employees and streaming talent. The platform had been making huge moves in the past 12 months, signing the likes of Ninja and Shroud to exclusive contracts, but it ultimately amounted to little growth for the platform, leading to its demise. Mixer would then partner with Facebook Gaming to ensure smaller talent would have a place on a prominent streaming platform.

Mixer had been heavily integrated into Xbox’s UI and dashboard, along with being tied into certain Microsoft games such as Forza Horizon 4. Fans have since wondered whether or not Facebook Gaming would occupy the same space on the Xbox dashboard as Mixer does, but Xbox’s top brass have come out to say that won’t be the case.

When asked on Reddit, Xbox’s Major Nelson had a pretty to the point answer: “If you are asking if the current Mixer integration in the dashboard is just going to become Facebook gaming. The answer is no.” Xbox’s head Phil Spencer also took to Twitter to state that they’re planning on allowing players to make the choice of what platform they’d like to stream on through Xbox.

It’s possible we could see streaming to Facebook Gaming directly through the Xbox in the future, along with the potential for YouTube streaming, though we won’t see any integration to the same level as Mixer was.
