UPDATE (07/10/2020): A teaser trailer has now been published confirming that we’ll hear more about Mortal Kombat 11’s future tomorrow at 6am PT/9am ET/2pm UK. The brief trailer seems to show Baraka running through the jungle, chased by an unknown force. Given the jungle setting, it adds some credence to the idea of Rambo being a DLC character.

ORIGINAL POST (06/10/2020): It would appear that NetherRealm aren’t quite finished with the Mortal Kombat 11 updates just yet, as last night, series creator Ed Boon tweeted out that there will be more MK11 news to share this week. He also revealed that the game has managed to sell over 8 million copies since its launch last year across PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, which is staggering for a fighting game. Check out the tweet for yourself below.

New MK11 Kontent, You Say?

Yes, though we’re not entirely sure what form this kontent will take. Datamining of the most recent update has found reference to Rain, a legacy character who also featured as Mortal Kombat X DLC, along with series mainstay Mileena and action movie guest character Rambo. I imagine one of Rambo’s fatalities would just be that turret sequence from the fourth film. It’s also possible that NetherRealm will be announcing some form of next-gen upgrade, which will hopefully be available for free to current players.

MK11’s last major DLC pack was Aftermath, a huge expansion that included a brand new campaign with six chapters of story content, building on MK11’s base story, along with three new characters in the form of Sheeva, Fujin and guest RoboCop. While a new MK11 update is unlikely to include even more story, we should expect to see some new characters.

What About Injustice 3?

Usually, in NetherRealm’s two year cycle, we’d be winding down support for MK11 and building up towards Injustice 3. After Mortal Kombat 9 in 2011, NetherRealm launched Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, before switching back to MKX in 2015. With Injustice 2 in 2017 and MK11 in 2019, many were expecting Injustice 3 to launch next year, even though NetherRealm themselves haven’t confirmed anything.

However, it’s possible that NetherRealm have seen how popular Mortal Kombat 11 has become and have decided to focus work there for now, before returning to Injustice 3 at a later date. When you consider that we’re also in the middle of a pandemic, forcing employees to work from home, it’s probably much easier to focus on new MK11 kontent than it is a brand new Injustice game. That said, maybe we’ll still hear about Injustice 3 at The Game Awards, similar to MK11’s initial announcement.
