Blasphemous 2: How to Defeat Eviterno, First of the Penitents

Generally speaking, when you come across a guy on a throne in either a Souls-like or a Metroidvania, you know things are about to get serious. That’s because whether it be Dracula or Gwyn, Lord of Cinder, a throne usually signifies the end of your adventure. That rule sticks here, with Blasphemous 2 carrying on the tradition of the first game and the (almost) final foe standing in your way being the guy in charge.

Boasting two separate forms, Eviterno is by far the most difficult boss in Blasphemous 2, and regardless of your skill level or build, you can likely expect to fight him at least a good 5-10 times before you come out on top. Still, since that’s probably why you’re here in the first place, we’re going to give you our top advice on how to put Eviterno back into the ground where he belongs.

For starters, we found the standard sword and ball and chain weapons to be best for this battle, so if you come in with a solid grasp on them and a good projectile-based prayer or two, that is definitely how you want to start things off. Eviterno has a lot of flashy attacks, but one of the first you’re likely to see is a giant ball of fire that he casts down at you. When this comes, get as far away from it as possible before it hits.

Once it does, you can watch the rising vertical flame pattern coming your way and do a jump-dodge through it. The boss will also shoot off a wave of five different colored orbs from one side of the screen on occasion. Note here that if you get close to him and dodge under the lowest orb, you can totally just wail away at him while the attack animation finishes.

Like a couple of previous bosses, Eviterno also sends waves of electrical energy out in a set pattern that should be jump-dodged through like the aforementioned flames. That’s basically it for the first form, but, as Liquid Snake is fond of saying, “It’s not over yet!” The overseer of Custodia in Blasphemous 2 will pull out a sword that looks suspiciously like the Mea Culpa and then transfer you to a new arena

Now, Eveterno has a massive sword swipe attack that you’re going to want to steer clear of. If you watch it closely, it swings the same way each time, but dodging through it can be a bit tricky until you get the timing down. He now sends fast waves of red magic your way that go down both sides of the screen and must be dodged through or jumped over.

The worst part is when you have him ¾ of the way down, though. He will summon every previous boss in the game as part of an ultra attack, and you’ll have to dodge or jump to avoid one of their signature moves each. The good news is that the order and attack seem to stay the same, so you can memorize this section as well.

While you’re also going to want to watch for a rising sword attack and a forward thrust style attack, both of which are best avoided by air-dodging away, that will pretty much spell the end for the toughest Blasphemous 2 boss. Though there is one final foe, they shouldn’t give you much trouble after this fight.
