Amnesia: The Bunker Looks Like Frictional’s Most Ambitious Game Yet

Amnesia The Bunker

Ahead of its launch later this month, Frictional Games have given their closest look yet at Amnesia: The Bunker, which appears to show the Swedish developers stepping out of their comfort zone. You can check out the ten minute gameplay trailer above, which depicts plenty of exploration and puzzle solving in a disquieting underground bunker.

Here’s the synopsis for Amnesia: The Bunker:

Left all alone in a desolate WW1 bunker with only one bullet remaining in the barrel, it’s up to you to face the oppressing terrors in the dark. Keep the lights on at all costs, persevere, and make your way out alive. A truly intense horror experience.

Immerse yourself in the multiple ways of tackling survival. In the shoes of the French soldier Henri Clément, you are armed with a revolver gun, a noisy dynamo flashlight, and other scarce supplies to scavenge and craft along the way. With randomization and unpredictable behavior, no play-through is the same.

Hunted by an ever-present threat reacting to your every move and sound, you must adapt your play-style to face hell. Every decision will change the outcome of how the game responds. Actions bear consequences.

Frictional’s horror games to date have all been fairly linear, combat-free experiences where the player feels vulnerable, almost hopeless against the horrors lurking in the dark. The Bunker may give the player a weapon and more ways of tackling obstacles, but it will be anything but a walk in the park. While Amnesia: Rebirth was generally well received, Frictional will no doubt be hoping that The Bunker places them back in the conversation that their earlier games did: as absolute masters of ruining pants.

Amnesia: The Bunker releases May 23rd for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X & S. It was originally slated to arrive a little earlier but was wisely pushed back so as to not compete (as much) with Tears of the Kingdom.
