American Gods: Season 4 – What You Should Know

American Gods

These days, a pantheon of gods isn’t really being worshiped the way the Egyptian, Greek, and Norse pantheons were. American Gods explores what modern society deifies: money, technology, and drugs, and pits them with the old gods.

American Gods is based on a novel written by Neil Gaiman. The show, specifically Season 1, has garnered critical acclaim and several award nominations. It’s been more than two years since Season 3 ended, so what’s fate got in store for American Gods: Season 4? Here’s what you should know about it.

When Is American Gods: Season 4 Being Released?

Unfortunately, American Gods: Season 4 has been canceled by Starz. Each season received weaker ratings and views than the last, and it simply wasn’t in the stars for Season 4. This decision by Starz was made public in March 2021.

This is really unfortunate because, unlike other shows, American Gods did not get to prepare for the cancellation. So now, fans are left with a cliffhanger and nothing else to show for it.

There may be hope yet though. Even though American Gods: Season 4 is gone, rumors of a movie or event to end the series are circulating. A tweet from Rick Whittle, the actor who plays Shadow Moon, seems to hint at something more for the series. Neil Gaiman is also dedicated to finishing the TV series. However, there haven’t been any official announcements on how American Gods will continue.

Will The Cast Return For American Gods: Season 4?

If the rumors ever came true and an American Gods movie is in the works, will the cast stay the same? American Gods has about as much drama behind the camera as it does in front of it. Actors and even the show developers keep getting replaced throughout its three-season run. Until more news surfaces, it’s uncertain who will stay and who will move on from American Gods: Season 4/movie.

Season 1 showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were replaced in the middle of production for Season 2. They were replaced by Jesse Alexander, who didn’t last long either. Towards the end of Season 2, Alexander was sidelined, leaving Neil Gaiman, the producing director Chris Bryne, and line producer Lisa Kussner to finish it. Charles Eglee took over as showrunner for Season 3.

Charles Eglee was supposed to be the showrunner for American Gods: Season 4 as well. So, he might be the one behind the possible movie.

Season 3 also had actor removals. The most notable ones being Mousa Kraish’s The Jinn and Orlando Jones’ Mr. Nancy being taken off the cast.

What Could American Gods: Season 4 Be About?

Even though American Gods is based on a novel, it’s not easy predicting what comes next. The show and the novel have taken two almost completely different paths. By now, American Gods: Season 4 could go anywhere.

The Season 3 finale left more questions than answers. Technical Boy found out that he was the Old God Prometheus. It’s not just him too; Technical Boy begins to suspect that maybe most if not all, the New Gods were previously Old Gods.

On the side of the Old Gods, Shadow is seemingly killed as a sacrifice to make Mr. Wednesday stronger.

American Gods: Season 4 would likely continue to blur the lines as to who’s friend and foe. The battle will evolve to be more than just “Old vs New.” Even though Shadow was shown to “die” in the finale, you can never truly tell with gods and TV protagonists.
