343 Industries Admits There’s “Work To Do” Regarding Halo Infinite’s Visuals

Craig seems to be fine though.

Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite developers 343 Industries have published a blog post on Halo Waypoint discussing the feedback the game received after being showcased at last week’s Xbox Series X presentation. While there were plenty of positive comments regarding the gameplay, the visuals weren’t spoken about quite so fondly, something that 343 is all too aware of.

Community Manager John Junyszek stated in the blog post that the team does “have work to do” regarding the game’s visual fidelity, specifically in reference to “characters and objects appearing flat, simplistic and plastic-like, lighting feeling dull and flat, and object pop-in”. As the build was from a work-in-progress that’s several weeks old, they anticipated some level of feedback regarding the visuals, but perhaps not to the scale it became. Still, the team is committed to created “a beautiful world for players to explore when we launch”.

As for the art style itself, 343 Industries is a lot more resolute. Their intention was to harken back to a more “classic” art style, reminiscent of the original trilogy as opposed to the offerings from Halo 4, 5 and Halo Wars 2. The goal is to create ” a more vibrant palette, ‘cleaner’ models and objects with less ‘noise’, though it doesn’t mean less detail”. John also mentions that while it might not be everyone’s personal preference, it’s a style that 343 are standing by.

But what about Craig the Brute, and the lightning rod of memes that emerged after the reveal? According to 343, he’s doing fine: “We’ve all laughed very hard at the nonstop stream of Craig memes the community is cranking out. Craig is thick-skinned and seems to be taking it in stride though all of this fame and attention seems to be going to his head.”
