Tetsuya Nomura Admits Final Fantasy 7 Remake Revealed Too Early

One of the biggest no-shows of this year’s E3, and there were a few, was Final Fantasy 7 Remake from Square Enix, marking the third straight E3 since the game was revealed where nothing was said about it. There’s been some sporadic mention of it over the past couple of years, but fans have been left mostly in the dark.

The game’s director, Tetsuya Nomura, who is also working on Kingdom Hearts 3, has finally addressed concerns about how the game is progressing, even going as far as to admit that the game was revealed too early.

Nomura made the concession during an interview with Italian website Multiplayer (translated by Kingdom Hearts Insider), but insists there was a good reason for it: “I am well aware of the fact that we announced it too early, but even in the industry, word was beginning to spread that we were working on the game, so we just decided not to keep it more secret and officially reveal it.”

It’s an interesting point that Nomura raises. Is it better to reveal a game early, but leave fans waiting for 5+ years in the case of Kingdom Hearts 3, or try to keep the game a secret until months before the scheduled release but run the risk of the game leaking and ruining a great reveal? It’s food for thought, and gives a great insight into the decision making behind a game’s PR and marketing.
