Sony E3 2017 Predictions: Will We See More of The Last of Us 2?

The Last of US 2

After a show-stopping conference at last year’s E3, how can Sony top it? The answer: they probably won’t. Instead, we’re likely to get updates on previously confirmed games, including the possibility of some much sought after release dates.

First up comes God of War, the game which opened last year’s show. Kratos is back, but not like we know him – he actually seems to have emotions other than overwhelming rage now.

Flanked by -what we have to assume is- his son, Kratos’ next adventure is high on the watchlist for many. With billboards seen near the show adorning the poster and with a pretty locked release date of 2018, expect to see more from God of War.

When it was revealed last year, Bend Studio’s (now SIE Bend Studio) Days Gone might have made a few people groan, “another zombie game, really?” But then that gameplay was shown off and everyone lost their minds.

Showcasing a level of detail rarely seen in massive onslaughts of enemies, Days Gone seems to be a third-person shooter all about the tactics. Details have been incredibly scarce then, so don’t be surprised to see more from it this time out.

Gran Turismo Sport is almost a guarantee to appear this year in one form or another with its release fast approaching. It’s unlikely that Sony will dedicate that much time to it, but a short new trailer will do enough to remind people that it exists.

The next game from David Cage, Detroit: Become Human, was announced at last year’s E3 but, again, little has been heard about it since.

Detroit Become Human

It’s a game set in the future focusing on what it means to be human with a heavy focus on player choice, but apart from that, information is scant. To keep people interested, you would expect Quantic Dream and Sony to show off something new this year.

Insomniac’s as yet untitled Spider-Man game is almost a shoo-in for the conference this year, given the upcoming movie’s hype.

Unveiled last year, we’ve only had a few dribbles of information on it since, so expect to see more gameplay along with a release date. As long as they can make the web-swinging feel as good as it did back on the PS2, the game should do just fine.

Spider-Man PS4

Thanks to Sony’s partnership with Activision, expect to see something new from Call of Duty: WWII. Gameplay is almost definite, though whatever’s on show is unlikely to take up too much of the conference time. Unless they’re detailing DLC again, that is.

Probably the most bankable showing at Sony’s conference will be Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. We already know a lot about the standalone expansion for Uncharted 4, so more gameplay and a quick sidenote from Naughty Dog is likely.

Speaking of everyone’s favourite PlayStation developer, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Part II has an outside chance of making an appearance. Unveiled at the most recent PSX, the trailer was originally meant to be shown at this year’s E3 as its production is still in its infancy. Gameplay and a release date is highly unlikely, but don’t put it past Sony or Naughty Dog to surprise everyone.

the last of us 2

If we’re getting into wishlist territory for predictions, Bloodborne 2 would be high on the agenda. With Dark Souls seemingly done, From Software’s other baby might get a chance to shine in the spotlight again.

A developer we haven’t heard much out of in a long time is Sucker Punch: the guys behind the InFamous series. With Second Son releasing to a warm reception as a decent PS4 exclusive, there’s still an audience for another entry in the superpowered series. Plus, thanks to the PS4 now entering its prime years, who knows what they could do with the tech?

With Sony’s propensity to wheel out some nostalgia with each passing year, we may seem some older franchises return to the spotlight – Spyro, anyone? Hell, if Bubsy can get another go-around, so can a beloved purple dragon.
