Rainbow Six Siege Will Be Getting A Loot System Without Microtransactions

Rainbow Six Siege

I have a love/hate relationship with the economy of Rainbow Six Siege. A lot of what Ubisoft are doing is great, especially with their now copied idea to allow all players to unlock the same new content, either through saving currency or microtransactions.

What I have noticed since I left and came back to the game, however, is that it has an almost impenetrable wall of cosmetic microtransactions. While this may not seem bad, the purchase price for even the most basic of gear is quite drastic; you would have to win an awful lot of matches before getting enough renown to pick up a simple hat.

Fortunately, Ubisoft have revealed that we will be getting a loot system separate from the microtransactions that players can enjoy without having to spend a penny or cent. According to Creative Director Xavier Marquis during a presentation, the system is there as just a “thank you” to fans for helping see through Siege to its second year.

Players will be able to unlock cosmetic at the end of every match, hopefully putting an end to saving up extraordinary amounts in the hopes of having a slightly shiner sidearm. In my mind, this is a superb idea: I have been sticking to the Elephant skin for all my guns almost since I first played the game – there’s something about grinding for cosmetics that has never sat right with me.

The system will be implemented in time for the second season of year two, which will be called Velvet Shell. The two new operators, Jackal and Mira, were recently shown off, as well as confirmation that Siege will not be getting any new modes and will instead focus solely on new Operators and maps. Velvet Shell kicks off Feb 7th.
