If you’re a big fan of looter shooters, you’ll probably be looking into playing Outriders, developed by People Can Fly and published by Square Enix that’s available right now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S. Like any self-respecting loot based game, there’s a complex crafting process that’ll allow you to truly refine and upgrade your gear, but if you’re struggling on where to start, we’ve got you covered.

Firstly, in order to unlock crafting, you’ll have to make progress in the game’s story. Outriders is split into several explorable areas, each with a handful of story missions and side quests. The first area after the prologue is Rift Town, but you’ll need to complete the First City, the next area, and rescue Dr. Zahedi in order to unlock crafting. After you rescue him, Zahedi will become part of your convoy, allowing you to upgrade your weapons.

Once you can craft, you’ve got a number of options available to you. Players can improve the rarity of their gear using either Iron, Leather or Titanium, depending on the gear type or rarity, or they can use Shards to upgrade an item’s core attributes. You can even swap weapon variants using Iron, which can change how a gun is used. They can also level up their gear if the gear’s level is below the maximum wearable level as stipulated by the World Tier. Higher World Tiers allow you to wear level 18 gear as a level 14 character, for instance.

Lastly, crafting allows you to add mods to your gear, which is where you can really upgrade your overall build. In order to unlock mods, you need to disassemble gear that has the mod you want on it. Once you’ve done that, the mod is readily available to you in the crafting process, meaning you can stick it on a different item at a cost to either your Iron or Leather. If you want to get the most out of your weapons and build, it pays to not sell them to vendors.
