Made in Abyss: Season 3 – What You Should Know

Another irksome wait

Made in Abyss

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the series’ second season, aired exactly five years after its predecessor. Riko’s venture into the Abyss’ dreadful final layer had fans on the edge of their seats biting their nails, making it one worthy to be named among the best anime of 2022. But like all the series’ adaptations we’ve had so far, it too left us off with many questions unanswered.

We’re obviously beating about the bush, and whether Made in Abyss: Season 3 is happening is what everyone wants an answer to. Sadly, the third season of the anime hasn’t been confirmed, and there are a couple of reasons why it’s unlikely that the franchise will return in the approaching months.

When Is Made in Abyss: Season 3 Coming Out?

Unfortunately, there’s been no announcement regarding Made in Abyss: Season 3, so its renewal status is pretty much up in the air right now. A massive obstacle for a sequel is that there is a severe lack of source material ahead.

As of December 2022, the manga is sitting at a little over 61 chapters, but the shocking thing about them is the time span they were released in, and that’s more than 10 years. Considering that Made in Abyss: Season 2 ended around Chapter 60 or so of the manga and that new chapters come out months apart, we may in fact have to wait another five years or even more this time around for the third season.

What Is Made in Abyss: Season 3 About? (Spoiler Alert)

Made in Abyss: Season 2 covered the story up till chapter 60 of the manga, that’s the point where Faputa agrees to join Riko and Reg’s party after she had just destroyed the Hollow village. While new friends were certainly made on the way and a whole lot was discovered about the Abyss, we still weren’t able to see the big moment everything had been building up towards— meeting Lyza.

For now, the story in the manga is barely a few chapters ahead, so nothing significant has happened after this. Until author Akihito Tsukushi makes new chapters, we can’t confirm where the story will head next, but what’s inevitable is that Lyza will always play a major part in the plot, right up until she shows up.

Which Studio Is Making Made in Abyss: Season 3?

Studio Kinema Citrus has been responsible for the vividly stunning adaptations of the manga which includes two seasons and three movies thus far. That’s why we’re pretty sure Akihito wouldn’t want anyone else to animate Made in Abyss: Season 3 other than Kinema Citrus.

If you’re amazed at how well the studio has done its job, it’s actually due to its staff being industry veterans who previously worked with Production I.G (Psyo-Pass) and Bones (Mob Psycho 100). While Made in Abyss is definitely one of the biggest adaptations they’ve made, it’s not the only time we’ve seen them excel in animation as they also happen to be the studio behind other visual marvels like The Rising of the Shield and Star Wars: Visions.

Where Will Made in Abyss: Season 3 Be Aired?

Everything from the anime to the movies has all been exclusively streaming on HIDIVE internationally, which is owing to Sentai Filmworks, a subsidiary of HIDIVE owning the rights for distribution. While on Netflix and Amazon Prime the anime is available in select few regions. Made in Abyss: Season 3 will most likely follow the same pattern and will stream on HIDIVE as well.

Anime fans living in Japan won’t have a problem though as they’ll be able to catch it on the usual channels like Tokyo MX, TVA, and SUN. Made in Abyss has also aired on Adult Swim in the past and we’re plenty sure that will be the case again in the future.
