Comedy and crime are two genres that flow really well together, especially in anime, and Netflix’s Great Pretender confirms that’s the case. After two rad seasons of Edamura and his crew committing unimaginable heists globally, many of us have been left guessing about the next one.
Sadly, Netflix hasn’t renewed the anime for Great Pretender: Season 3. That would be shocking, but sooner or later, all Netflix originals end up in limbo for a long time. So while there’s no news about a third season, hope remains still as the service announced recently that Kengan Ashura: Season 3 is coming in 2023, five years after the second season aired, and if we’re lucky, Great Pretender might not be that far behind.

There’s no release date for Great Pretender: Season 3 at the moment. The third season of the anime wasn’t ever confirmed to be in production, but neither was the series scrapped for that matter. It might be a long shot, but 2025 seems to be a good guess for the anime’s return considering Netflix’s history.
Great Pretender is an underrated anime, and so the fan base for it just isn’t big enough right now to justify investment for a third season. As per Netflix, they haven’t ever been late to renew a successful show, so if you really want a third season, better get back to binging the anime again to increase its viewership.
What Is Great Pretender: Season 3 About? (Spoiler Alert)
For those who didn’t know, the anime isn’t based on a manga. In fact, Studio Wit made it as an original project for Netflix, so as far as where the story will go in Great Pretender: Season 3, we can’t be fully sure of the plot, although, the second season’s ending teased a few things.
Eddie Cassano had become the new US President, and Laurent was seen as his bodyguard, but considering strength isn’t exactly his strong suit, he’s probably planning another heist and it sure looks like a big one. But that’s still not as big as finding out that Dorothy is alive despite everyone being under the impression she died many years ago. Therefore her journey to reunite with Laurent and his new group of misfits will likely be the major story beat.
Which Studio Is Making Great Pretender: Season 3?
Studio Wit will make Great Pretender: Season 3 since the anime is actually one of their original concepts. Currently the studio is busy animating Spy x Family: Season 2, and more Ranking of Kings, so they’re completely booked in the near future.
Deducing from that, 2025 again presents itself as the probable year when Great Pretender: Season 3 will release, but as long as Studio Wit makes visuals stellar like before, fans wouldn’t mind waiting.
Where Will Great Pretender: Season 3 Be Aired?
Great Pretender: Season 3 will air only on Netflix when it releases. As the anime is a Netflix original project, the service holds the rights to stream it exclusively, so unfortunately, you won’t be able to catch any previous or new season on other platforms like Crunchyroll, and Funimation.
It’s a regrettable fact but that’s the situation with all Netflix originals including Baki, Devilman: Crybaby, and Castlevania. Probably the best thing to do when Great Pretender: Season 3 debuts would be to buy a Netflix subscription for a month since that trumps purchasing Blu-ray discs any day because of their price tags, but if you’re on the collector’s side of things, it’s a no brainer.
