God of War Ragnarok: How To Defeat Vanadis

God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok‘s boss fights are no easy feat. During The Lost Sanctuary quest, the player will meet Vanadis and be tasked with beating her, marking the return of the Valkyries. Vanadis enters the battle area with a jump scare as Kratos is fighting other enemies, and brings two attack phases. Here’s how to defeat Vanadis.

Using Atreus’ sonic arrows on Vanadis will stun her for a short while which enables Kratos to get up close for melee attacks before quickly retreating. Building up Atreus’ arrows to maximum and then firing them all at once will give the most opportunity for melee attacks at this stage. The blades of chaos specifically have been effective, especially when spinning them to inflict burn damage.

Vanadis’ speed is what makes this fight tricky, so reading her movements is key to defeating her. She fires a bow from range but relies on sword combinations at close-range. The arrows can easily be avoided, but she can use this time to close in whilst the player is attempting to dodge them. An important factor to remember is never to lose sight of her, and try to avoid using Runic attacks which leave Kratos vulnerable – due to her speed Vanadis will take advantage of these windows.

When Vanadis jumps with her sword raised, roll backwards to avoid the incoming attack. A red ring will indicate when this is imminent. Attack straight afterwards to maximise your damage input but be prepared to quickly dodge again.

Vanadis’ projectiles can be avoided by dodging or blocking, but she will occasionally charge directly at Kratos straight afterwards so be prepared to block after the attack comes. After she zips into the air, she will slam down in Kratos’ direction and this attack cannot be blocked, so get ready to dodge.

After a short cutscene when Vanadis has lost three bars of health, a second phase of the boss fight will begin. Kratos learns the Valour ability which enables the activation of Rage to heal rather than enter Fury mode which may prove invaluable for the remainder of the fight.

During this phase, Vanadis will be throwing poisonous projectiles, so be sure to roll out of the way of them to avoid taking damage. Continue using Atreus’ sonic arrows to stun her and use the same melee attacks as before. An effective way to lay plenty of damage into her is to parry her sword attacks as this provides opportunity for combos.

The fight ends as Vanadis removes her mask.

God of War Ragnarok is available on PS5 and PS4.
