Fortnite Fans Want Epic Games To #RevertTurboBuilding

The backlash has been quite severe.

Yesterday saw the release of the Fortnite v10.20 patch, which brought with it a new Rift Zone to tie in with Borderlands, cosmetics, the Shield Bubble, and a reshuffling of the loot pool with the vaulting of three important items. Within the patch notes, an update to Turbo Building was mentioned, but what Fortnite fans didn’t know was how drastically it would change the very foundation of the game: building.

A change was made in an effort to make ping less of an integral part of success, but the change has instead had the opposite effect, taking the state of building back to Fortnite Season 4 in terms of speed and reliability. Players discovered that 90s (being able to rapidly build for height) would come out all wrong, as well as that boxing up is even less dependable now with walls being easily retaken and miniguns destroying Turbo Build holds.

This comes down to Epic changing “the time between subsequent Turbo Build placements from 0.05 seconds to 0.15”, which basically means that builds now take three times as long to establish.

The players who are feeling this the most are those who play professionally, who believe it to be detrimental to their playstyle and general feel of the game. Players like Mongraal, Ninja, benjyfishy, and Nick Eh 30 opined on the change.

There are plenty of “spicier” replies and comments than these, but none that we can possibly include if we want to stay on Google’s good side. The Fortnite community is certainly a passionate one.

With #RevertTurboBuilding trending worldwide at one point, Epic Games decided to share a blog post update to clue players in on why they made the change.

Citing a need to fix “spam building”, ping dependence, and excessive turtling, Epic also mentioned that they (ironically) didn’t want to change how building feels. They mentioned that they were working on next steps to fix the “fix”, though there is no ETA on an update. Their reasoning for the tweak has not gone down well so far, the ratio on their tweet saying as much.

It’s been an exhausting season for professional and competitive Fortnite players so far, it perhaps being the most controversial to date. The BRUTE mech was significantly overpowered before receiving a nerf (though v10.20 buffed it again slightly) and new items being added, such as the insta-kill Junk Rift, seem to be catered towards casual players.

Epic are in an unenviable spot here: they cannot please both casual and professional players no matter what they do. All games need casual players to thrive, yet Fortnite has become such a competitive game over the last couple of years that it’s hard for new players to even try to play the game for the first time. September 27th marks the second anniversary of Battle Royale, so it will be interesting to see what shape the game is in by that huge milestone. A lot of content creators and players are flocking to Minecraft and Apex Legends following the disappointments of Season X, so Epic have to do something.

Isn’t it about time they gave out another free Battle Pass?
