Sometimes, you just don’t have the time to walk your way to your destination. It’s just too darned slow. If only there was a way to travel that was fast. A “fast travel”, if you will. Luckily for you, Dragon’s Dogma 2 features fast travel, but this game’s method of handling instanteous transportation is a little bit different than other games.

There are two different kinds of fast travel in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and neither are the most conventional version you’d expect in an RPG like Skyrim. Both versions of fast travel require careful planning and, in one case, a lot of resources.

The easiest kind of fast travel in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is via oxcart caravans. In most of the major cities in the game, you can find oxcart caravans sat near one of the entrances or exits of the city. You can find them on the map when you’re inside a city by the ox icon. You’ll need to wait until morning before the cart is ready to leave, as carts aren’t supposed to travel at night, but there’s a sign you can interact with next to the cart that’ll let you wait until they’re ready to go. At that point, simply talk to the driver, pay them driver a fee, then sit in the cart at the back and press Y/Triangle to “doze off”. The driver will travel to a predetermined destination, depending on which cart you entered and where.

There are some caveats to the oxcart method of travel. For instance, the caravan can only travel from city to city, making it more like a train than a taxi, though you don’t need to doze off while riding the caravan. You could instead simply ride the caravan a portion of the way, then hop off to complete whatever quest you’ve got, but that requires paying attention to the game as it moves at a natural pace, negating that whole “fast” part.

The other thing to keep in mind though is that caravans can be susceptible to raids from monsters, including bosses like ogres, cyclopses and minotaurs. These bosses can even destroy the cart you’ve been riding, which then means you’d have to hoof it the rest of the way towards your destination. At least the caravan comes with an armed escort, so you’ll be more protected from monsters than if you were on your own, but it’s not going to be enough to stop a 20 foot tall monster from tossing the caravan cart like a salad.

Buyer beware on caravan cart travel, basically.

The other means of fast travel concerns Portcrystals. These items are essentially totems that can be teleported to from any outdoor area in the game, though you will need to use a Ferrystone in order to make use of the portcrystals. During our playthrough, we’ve only managed to find two portcrystals that were already placed in the world. One was in the city of Vernworth, the other in Harve Village to the west. Just interact with both of them and then you’ll be able to travel to them at will.

That being said, you can also find portable portcrystal items out in the world. These are portcrystals that you can place in nearly all outdoor areas on the map, letting you travel to that specific destination at any time. Naturally, you have to have visited that area already in order to place a portcrystal there, but this method of fast travel is great if you need to make multiple return trips to a specific destination, like the capital city of Battahl.

Ferrystones can be found pretty easily in the world, particularly in the back half of the game, as enemies can sometimes drop them as loot. They can also be found in treasure chests, or purchased from various vendors for 10,000G. As for placable portcrystals, we’ve managed to find three so far, though there are likely even more to find in the world:

– One is unlocked while completing main story quests, as you receive it from Brant.
– One can be found in the the Forested Griffin’s Nest, which can be found in the Western portion of the map in Misty Marshes.
– One can be bought from the Dragon Forged, an old Arisen who resides on the Olta’Battahl Coastline, northeast of the city of Bakbattahl. You’ll travel through this area during the main quest “Convergeance”.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is available now on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X & S.
