When people think of iconic video game series, the BioShock games are definitely up there. The retrofuturistic series has received critical acclaim for its fun combat, unique settings, and shocking plot twists. Not to mention that the original BioShock was one of the greatest video games of its time, praised for its beautiful art and engaging horror elements. With how successful the BioShock series is, many fans look forward to the fourth installment, BioShock 4.

Thankfully, 2K Games announced that a new BioShock game is under development in 2019. However, more than three years have passed since that announcement, and no such game has been released. You may ask yourself, what gives? Is BioShock 4 still going to happen or not? If so, when will it be released? If you want answers, here’s everything you should know about BioShock 4.

When Is BioShock 4 Coming Out?

Right now, there’s no official release date for BioShock 4. Furthermore, despite the game being confirmed in 2019, neither 2K nor the developers have shared updates ever since. Looking back at the original announcement, 2K did mention that BioShock 4 would take several years to develop, and it sounds like that’ll continue to be the case.

A few months ago, there were rumors that BioShock 4 is currently stuck in development hell, with the game having management issues and being rebooted four times. However, the credibility of these rumors is up for question, as the leaker hasn’t provided actual evidence and was proven wrong several times before. Still, there’s no denying that the leaks are somewhat believable, given the long wait for BioShock 4.

Considering that BioShock Infinite also faced development issues at the time, it’s quite ironic that it’s happening again. With the developers remaining dead silent, there’s no telling when BioShock 4 will come out. If the developers do confirm BioShock 4’s release date, we’ll update this article to let you know.

What Will BioShock 4 Be About?

Since the studios haven’t released any new updates, it’s currently unclear what BioShock 4 will be about. Nonetheless, some potential leaks and rumors hint at when and where BioShock 4 takes place.

Journalist Colin Moriarty shared details regarding BioShock 4 in a Sacred Symbols episode. He mentioned that BioShock 4 takes place in the 1960s in an Antarctic city called Borealis. Moriarty also stated that the sequel is internally codenamed “Parkside” and will release with the title BioShock Immortal. He also revealed that BioShock 4 will be tied to the previous BioShock Games.

For now, you might want to take that information with a grain of salt, as Moriarty said that his source might be outdated because the game got rebooted. This means that any leaks that were spread in the past might be inaccurate since the final product could be entirely different. Still, exploring an Antarctic region would make sense, considering the previous games already took us underwater with Rapture and to the sky with Columbia.

There are also rumors that BioShock 4 will be an open-world game. The developers once posted a job listing, looking for a senior writer who could “weave impactful, character-driven stories in an open-world setting.” But with the developers keeping everything under wraps, you’ll have to wait and see if the rumors are true.

What Platforms Will BioShock 4 Be On?

Assuming it’s years away from release, BioShock 4 will most likely be available on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X & S, and PC. It might not become playable on older-gen consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It also may appear on whatever platform follows the Switch, but right now that’s just a guess as nobody knows how powerful it will be.

There’s also a chance that the game will take too long to develop that it reaches the likes of the PlayStation 6, but let’s hope that it doesn’t come to that.

Who Will Develop BioShock 4?

BioShock 4 is confirmed to be in development under Cloud Chamber. Cloud Chamber will replace Irrational Games, rebranded as Ghost Story Games, as they take the helm for BioShock 4. The company is led by Kelly Gilmore, the former executive producer for Firaxis Games, known for Civilization and X-COM.

Despite being a new company, their team includes several BioShock veterans, namely Hogarth de la Plante, Scott Sinclair, and Jonathan Pelling. De la Pante was the Level Architect for the original BioShock and is now the Creative Director for BioShock 4. Sinclair and Pelling will also return with their previous roles as Art Director and Design Director, respectively.

Unfortunately, the previous games’ creative director, Ken Lavine, will not be affiliated with BioShock 4’s development. Lavine and Ghost Story Games are working on a new game called Judas, which is set to release soon.
