How to build a better mutant.

Surviving in a post-apocalyptic landscape that’s been decimated by years of environmental abuse by humanity has to be pretty difficult, and that’s what Biomutant is all about. As a 3-foot tall looking fluff monster, you’ll have to brave the various enemies, factions and hazards in order to survive and ultimately decide the fate of the world.

Of course, doing so might be a bit overwhelming when you first start out, so we’re on hand to make sure you know what you’re doing once you jump into the world of Biomutant. Here are all the tips you’ll need to know when playing Biomutant.

1. Play To Your Strengths

When you first boot up Biomutant and start a new game, you’ll be tasked with creating a character from one of several breeds, each with their own stat benefits. From there, you’ll tinker with their proportions, which changes your character’s base stats even further. In this initial stage, it’s best to create a build that leans into your breed’s proficiencies. No point making a strength based breed focus on speed or magic early on.

The levelling system is forgiving enough that you can focus on your weaker aspects as you progress, allowing you to shore up your worst traits, or just dump more points into your strengths so you become even more powerful.

2. Fight Often

The world of Biomutant is filled with creatures and other enemy mutants that’ll look to put an end to you, and unless you’re low on health with no healing items, it’s almost always worth meeting the aggression head on. Enemies will tend to drop some kind of useful loot, and the EXP gained from fights allows you to consistently level up pretty quickly. It’s usually a good idea to get into fights, however…

3. Be Wary Of Levels

For the most part, enemies in Biomutant tend to scale with you as you progress through the game, though the further north you travel, the harder it gets. Sometimes, you might encounter enemies that are 5 levels ahead of where you are, and while it’s certainly possible to beat them, you’ll need to be careful and lean heavily into your strengths in order to do so. Sometimes however, discretion is the better part of valour.

4. Exploration Is (Mostly) Worth Doing

As an open world RPG, Biomutant has plenty of opportunities to find secrets, loot and additional content hidden in every dark corner of its decently sized map. In order to complete your main objectives, you’ll be travelling across most of the map anyway, so if you happen to come across a named area with a checklist of secrets to find on the left-hand side of the screen, it’s usually worth stopping and having a look. Often, you can find useful equipment, or even just a fast-travel station that’ll make exploration easier.

5. Resolve The Tribe War Early

One of your main objectives in the game is finding a way to resolve the ongoing Tribe War that sees six factions vying for control of the map. Players can ally themselves with the different tribes and take over other territories, deciding the fate of the other tribes, and it’s worth going through this process early. Dealing with a rival tribe unlocks their special weapon for use, which can be really powerful. It’s also worth noting that you can unlock the option to end the war peacefully after uniting two of the tribes, but doing so doesn’t net you the other tribe weapons. Something to consider.

6. Outpost Shopping

Another benefit of completing the Tribe War first is that the various outposts unlock different shops, allowing you to trade and barter with the shopkeepers for new weapons, armour and the like. If you’re in need of some supplies, it’s best to stop by your nearest owned outpost and just see what you can buy.

7. Resistance Is Futile

Throughout the map, you’ll find various areas that contain different elemental issues for you to deal with, such as a lack of oxygen, too much radiation, too hot or too cold. You can build up resistances to these elements by finding set items, or you can find special suits that grant immunity. However, aside from the Dead Zone, which has a lack of oxygen that requires the Mekaton suit obtained during the story and a World Eater waiting on the other side, you don’t need to spend too much time in the other areas. If you’re just interested in racing towards the end of the game, don’t worry so much about resistances.

8. Distracting Bosses

Speaking of World Eaters, dealing with them is another key part of the game’s progression, with you completing set quests that see you either killing or sparing them. When fighting a World Eater, it’s worth remembering that you’re equipped with a tool designed to distract them, mapped to the left trigger. Sometimes the boss will spam an attack pattern that’s hard to deal with, and it’s these moments where you’re supposed to launch the distraction. I kept forgetting while playing, so I’m here to make sure you don’t.

9. Be Careful Interacting With The Environment

A key part of the game’s mechanics is an aura system that indicates whether or not you’re leaning to the good side or the bad. One unfortunate issue I ran into while playing Biomutant was stumbling across different interact prompts, with one located at an execution while another was found by a lone market stall. For the first one, I killed the guard and hit the prompt, thinking it’d free the prisoners, only for my character to deliver some presumably unholy sermon which darkened the world. As for the market stall, interacting with that set it on fire. Both instances led to me developing bad karma unintentionally. Be careful which buttons you press while exploring.

10. Upgrade Your Gear Where Possible

Surviving in the post-apocalyptic wilderness means cobbling together whatever resources and items you can find, and crafting something awesome out of it. Biomutant allows you to do this by crafting and upgrading your weapons and armour, which is a worthwhile pursuit. Upgrading your gear can often mean the difference between life and death, so be sure to keep your items in good shape. For more info, we have an in-depth crafting guide you can check out right here.
