Mix of the Month Episode 1: Feonix

Here at CV we’ve had monthly and weekly features on bands, singles, poems, but we’ve never given a regular platform to the artists who ply their trade on the ones and twos. That in mind, I present to you our new Mix of the Month feature. Every month, we’ll shine a spotlight on one of our favourite DJs or producers, and in turn, they’ll put together an exclusive mix for us.

For the first, I decided to pay a visit to an old friend. Feonix has featured on Cultured Vultures before, when I interviewed him alongside his fellow LSN cohorts earlier this year. Both in and out of LSN, Feonix is a force to be reckoned with, throwing out deep, sinister beats which straddle the North Welsh and Mancunian scenes, and hit hard wherever else they might land, from London to Croatia to New York.

This time around though, it’s all about him, and he’s put together a nasty motherfucker of a mix for us, blending his usual 140 darkness with some new material that moves elsewhere on the beat signature scale, and no shortage of grime.

What kind of vibe were you aiming for with this mix?
With this mix I was trying to capture some of the sets I’ve played over the summer and express two things: I’ve been busy making some new beats, and they’re not just 140.

Which tracks are getting a lot of play in your sets at the moment?
I do like to keep a bit of variety between my mixes; that said I’ve been hammering the Ivy Lab and 20/20 stuff quite a lot lately. I usually try and throw in a couple of Commodo tunes (out of obvious respect and general appreciation for his music) as well as the LSN bits, got some nice new beats on the way over there.

What’s the best night you’ve played recently?
It wasn’t a Feonix set, but Lethargy Festival in Switzerland was off the hook. We were only there for the night we played so I’m counting it. We had an LSN set there on the Saturday, playing before Throwing Snow (of whom I’m a big fan), none of us had been to Zurich before so that first of all was pretty darn wonderful. The festival itself was incredibly set up, beautiful lights, right by the lake, sick views, but yeah, the night was a bit mind blowing, the room was packed out, we had Throwing Snow singing along to a Blawan bootleg. Bit of a dream really.

What’s the best night you’ve been to without playing recently?
If I’m honest, I don’t get out to nights anywhere near as much as I should be doing, but one of the last ones I went to was the Phaeleh presents night at Fabric. Djrum, Om Unit, the Bug and his entourage of MCs. It was a fat night, the first and potentially only time I went to Fabric. Glad it happened, gutted about what’s happened since.

Best moment you’ve had at any night you’ve ever played?
The first time we played an LSN tune out, it was at Hendre Hall, it was just a night of music, Versa was headlining and we had everyone from LSN doing a set individually, must’ve been Summer of 2012, cos it was probably the only tune we’d made up until that point. It was called Crowbar. It was getting to the last tune of my set, I think Noztaw had come behind the decks, Versa was getting his tunes ready, the room was nicely full, and we dropped das Crowbar. It actually went off. It was the first time I ever reloaded a tune haha just remember the weight… Nothing ever came of that tune, but it holds a special place in my memory.
