Comparing Stanley Kubrick and Wes Anderson’s Filmmaking Styles

Kubrick Anderson

At first glance, it might seem that Stanley Kubrick and Wes Anderson have nothing in common when it comes to their filmmaking styles. Kubrick is known for disturbing, unsettling imagery whereas Anderson is most famous for his lo-fi aesthetics.

However, don’t try to tell video editor Dante Guerrilla that. He’s compiled a fascinating montage to show how inspired by Kubrick Anderson actually is with plenty of nods to the auteur’s distinctive panning and framing. One of the most compelling comparisons is a balcony scene from Eyes Wide Shut being replicated in plenty of Anderson movies.

Of all of Kubrick’s movies, Anderson seems to take most of his inspiration from A Clockwork Orange, followed closely by The Shining – even as hard as it to believe, Full Metal Jacket has been a big influence of the indie artist’s style, too.

Anderson, of course, isn’t the only director Kubrick has inspired, so there’s no denying that even if his films fall of the public radar, his vision never will.
