Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground’s UI can be unforgiving in clearly presenting vital unit information. For players to optimize their tactical decision-making and for beginners interested in the game in general, it’s important to get an understanding of their units in Storm Ground.

Here are the main unit elements in Storm Ground:

And here is everything you need to know about units in Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground.

Type

Units will have a type associated with them that gives an at-a-glance indication of the unit’s optimal combat role. There are five general types: tank, artillery, assault, scout, and wizard.

Tank units will usually have abilities and a statline, which gears them for frontline combat and taking damage.

Artillery units are the classic ranged units that snipe enemies from afar.

Assault units are usually mobile support or offensive units, capable of rapid and flexible deployments.

Scout units have the inherent ability of revealing traps and other hidden effects on the battlefield and are usually not suited for heavy combat due to limited damage options.

Finally, wizards are some of the most expensive and powerful units, as they specialize in costly area denial, damage, or status effect abilities requiring a lot of Aethyr to use successfully.

Statline

Every unit in Storm Ground has four key stats, plus an experience bar, which denote baseline unit capabilities: damage (red), armor (yellow), health (green), movement (blue). The damage stat indicates how much a unit does with their basic attack and doesn’t affect the damage units do from active or passive abilities.

The armor stat indicates how much damage a unit can ignore when hit by an attack or an ability that may cause damage. If the total armor of the unit is equal to or greater than the damage of an incoming offensive action, the unit will have a chance to completely block and ignore damage from that attack.

The health stat indicates the total number of hit points a unit has before it’s removed from battle due to damage or other effects. The movement stat denotes how many hexes a unit can move during their turn. The movement stat can also be considered an action stat as taking an action to attack counts as a move into the hex, if it’s with a melee weapon. Ranged units usually can’t attack and move in the same turn but may use abilities if available.

The experience bar simply indicates the unit’s progress in levelling up from combat. Once leveled up, the unit’s capabilities improve.

Wargear and Skills

On top of their statline, every unit has a slew of customizable slots and options: mainhand weapon, offhand weapon, armor, equipment, and skills. Any and all of these customizable slots will also provide the unit with passive or active abilities and may increase the unit’s stats.

The mainhand and offhand weapon slots are the unit’s primary tools of action. These slots allow for a wide range of approaches, such as dual-wielding, if capable, using a sword (or other one-handed weapon) and shield or a two-handed weapon. The armor slot allows the player to customize the protective gear the unit wears, providing additional benefits.

All units will have an equipment slot where miscellaneous items can go, like traps, mutations, and other gadgets. Not every unit will have an eligible item, but every unit will have an item slot. In addition, all units have a skill slot where players can slot in an additional effect for the unit, which range from cooldown and ability cost reductions to ability enhancements.

Summoning

All non-hero units will have a power cost requirement (akin to a mana cost in card games like Hearthstone or Magic: the Gathering) for them to be summoned onto the tactical map. Each unit has its own cost that can only be seen on the warband composition screen. Some skill additions and wargear items may have power cost increases associated with them, so be sure to check unit costs carefully when composing a warband.

Customizing and battling with units forms the core of Storm Ground’s gameplay focus. It’s crucial that players understand their units’ capabilities to make the best possible decisions in composing their forces and engaging in battle. And now that unit information is laid out in full view, the next challenge is to use this knowledge to derive innovative tactics and clever strategies to achieve victory.
