No.

The Last Stand: Aftermath has every chance of being one of the biggest new zombie games of 2021, but does it also follow the biggest craze in gaming and go down the open world route?

The answer is no, The Last Stand: Aftermath is not open world. Despite being slightly similar to State of Decay, The Last Stand: Aftermath instead consists of various small sandboxes for players to explore on their route to “The End”. Really, The Last Stand: Aftermath is more like the underrated Zombi, but with far greater variety, randomness, and an isometric view instead of first-person.

As a roguelite, players start off as a random survivor who then sets off on a journey to find supplies and scout out the ruined world, one stop at a time. At these stops, player can explore the suburbs, supermarkets and more. Each sandbox consists of just a few houses so they are very small, though they’re usually packed with stuff to find — if you can survive. No worries if you don’t, though: it’s time for the next survivor.

While the lack of open world might put some players off The Last Stand: Aftermath, it really shouldn’t. There’s a strong story that might not work as well with an open world, and the game’s roguelite nature means no run is ever the same. Plus, with the game’s rotating cast of survivors, it might not just work as well in an open world.

The Last Stand: Aftermath is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S.
