10 Musicians You Need to Hear this Summer

Deap Vally

Summer is my favourite time of year. Festivals, seemingly endless days and the perfect time to listen to some new, and not so new, music. Here’s my list of ten recommendations for summer 2014.

Michael Kiwanuka

With possibly the smoothest voice in the world, Michael Kiwanuka is a soul musician whose song writing prowess and vocal ability will leave you speechless.

Broken Bells

An American indie band whose use of funk and electronica separate them from the masses. Their brilliant single ‘After the Disco’ will remain engraved into your sub-conscious for weeks.

Brother and Bones

Folk rock done good. This band write songs brilliantly, their musicianship is inspiring, and the mixture of electric and acoustic works to produce great music.

Deap Vally

DO YOU LIKE LOUD GUITARS? Of course you do. From this female duo come burning hot riffs, rutting drums, and explosive vocals.

Jimi Goodwin

Indie-hero and ex-doves front man, Jimi Goodwin, has recently released his critically acclaimed debut solo album ‘odludek’ (which is very very good by the way). ‘Oh! Whiskey’ will ease you into summer perfectly.

Matthew and The Atlas

Electronica and folk have never sounded so good together. Having recently released their debut album ‘Other Rivers’ Matthew and the Atlas are well on the road to well-deserved success. Beautiful at any time of year.

Nick Mulvey

An acoustic musician very different from your usual ‘Guy with a guitar’. His recent debut album ‘First Mind’ has been a triumph, critically and commercially. Mind-bendingly catchy, a great songwriter and musician.

Nick Waterhouse

An American singer and songwriter whose roots are firmly embedded in soul, rhythm and blues. Edgy and feel-good, with Jim Morrison-esque vocals and soulful melodies.

Royal Blood

Heavy rock duo that produce only the best head bang inducing brilliance. They have recently released the ‘Out Of The Black EP’ and also found a fan in rock god Jimmy Page… and if he recommends it then you should probably give it a go.

Van T

Cape Town based singer/song writer with a beautiful voice and irresistible rhythms. Uplifting, full of joy and the perfect bed mate of cold drinks and warm sun. If you’re a fan of The Lumineers, Gabrielle Aplin or Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros then Van T is someone you should have a listen to.

So, there you have it, 10 musicians you should check out this summer. I hope you like their music as much as I do.
