As is the case in many RPGs, Starfield has a tonne of items and resources that you can acquire that which can aid you on your journey throughout the cosmos. Some items are immediately handy, like weapons or ammo, while others are resources like metals and other materials, which can be poured into the game’s crafting, researching and outpost building mechanics. However, not all items are easily found, including Quantum Essence, an item you’ll only start obtaining towards the midway point of the game’s main quest. Here’s everything you need to know about Quantum Essence in Starfield, but beware spoilers for parts of the game’s main quest.

Starfield Quantum Essence Explained

Quantum Essence in Starfield is a highly unique and rare item that can only be obtained in one way: killing Starborn.

During the main story mission Into The Unknown, you’ll begin to gain super powers that can make life in the Settled Systems a lot easier. Unfortunately, gaining power comes with consequence, one that becomes clear after completing the All That Money Can Buy main quest. After heading to orbit from Neon, you’ll find that you’ve attracted the attention of the Starborn, a mysterious race that are hellbent on preventing you from collecting all the Artifacts.

After this point in the story, any time you either collect an artifact that’s on a planet (which discounts the No Sudden Moves quest artifact), or whenever you acquire a power from a temple, you’ll be accosted by a Starborn. They can be quite tough to take down as they can teleport, but if you’ve got a high damage rifle or other kind of automatic weapon, you can burst them down pretty quickly.

Once you’ve taken out a Starborn, the only item they’ll drop is a Quantum Essence, which will be added to your inventory automatically. Quantum Essence is an item that improves the power regeneration speed of all your powers for 60 seconds, meaning you’ll be able to throw Gravity Wave during a fight a lot more often.

You can only use Quantum Essence from the Powers section of the pause menu, but holding Quantum Essence isn’t added to your overall mass, meaning you can collect as many as you like. If you manage to obtain 20 of them, you’ll even obtain the War of Angels achievement.
