Sons of the Forest: How To Make Planks

Planks are an important part of building in Sons of the Forest, especially when it comes to building houses like the Log Cabin. They don’t grow on trees, though — well, not quite literally anyway. You’re going to have to make some planks.

To make planks, you must first cut a tree down with either your default Utility Axe or the Modern Axe. You want to pick a tree that’s fairly wide, otherwise you will only cut it into sticks.

Once the tree has been felled and split into logs, approach one of the logs with your axe equipped, then look at it from the middle while slightly far back from it. You should see a dotted red line all the way up it, left click to cut the log into 2x planks.

If you’re struggling with the finicky building and chopping in Sons of the Forest, don’t worry — it is a bit weird. Pressing G while carrying the log will simply drop it and allow you to cut it up. However, if you left click as prompted, that will actually place the log as a building block. Either hold C to pick it up again, or simply hit it with left click to take it out of this mode.
