First Watch Games and Hi-Rez Studios have announced that Rogue Company, their third person tactical shooter, will be launching into closed beta on PC, PS4, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch, the company’s first ever simultaneous launch on all major platforms.

The game will include cross-play and cross-progression across all platforms, meaning you’ll be able to take Rogue Company from your home console or PC, and pick up where you left off on the Nintendo Switch when you’re stuck in the bathroom.

To accommodate for cross-play, Rogue Company will utilise input-based matchmaking, so that keyboard and mouse players will stick with players of the same input, while controller players will also be matched together. If you’re in a party that’s using mixed inputs, you’ll be thrown into the keyboard and mouse pool with other mixed groups.

Also, to ensure that no one platform gets the advantage over another one, all platforms will run at 60fps during gameplay, including Switch handheld. The same team that worked on making sure SMITE and Paladins ran at 60fps on the Switch is also working on Rogue Company, and hopefully that work will pay off for players on the handheld platform.

Scott Zier, the creative director for Rogue Company, talked about how important cross-play is to the fundamental Rogue Company experience: “We see cross play and cross progression as foundational features in all of our games, and Rogue Company was built from the ground up to support them.”

He added: “We want our players to be able to play with their friends no matter what platform they are on, and we want them to be able to swap platforms and keep their progress in Rogue Company. This is near and dear to us as gamers ourselves. As developers, there are a wide range of advantages to this approach, including dramatically improved matchmaking quality with less wait time. It’s just a win for everyone.”

Scott also mentioned how they developed the game’s maps to clearly display characters so that players aren’t necessarily pixel hunting for an enemy sniper hidden in a bush. While certain PC hardware and consoles might offer a downgrade when compared to other platforms, Rogue Company should hopefully offer the same core experience across platforms. They also mentioned that the game won’t feature PC to console matchmaking at launch, but it’ll be added to the game in the near future.
