It looks like its detractors might have spoken too soon – Resident Evil 7 has received its first review and it’s a positive one.

Respected Japanese publication Famitsu, who are used as a measuring stick by people in the west as well as the east, have granted it a score of 36/40. And it isn’t just one reviewer, the scores consist of four separate verdicts from four different writers, so the average is 9/10.

Resident Evil 7

Weirdly, however, it has a lower rating than Umbrella Corps, one of the most underwhelming games of last year, which is putting it lightly. Weirder still, it has a lower rating than Resident Evil 6, itself more revered by Famitsu than Resident Evil 4: a hugely significant title for the entire genre. These guys don’t like to go with the curve, do they.

We’re pretty excited for Resident Evil 7 ahead of its release on the 24th of January. It’s taking the series back to its horror roots with contemporary mechanics, and even if it doesn’t work out for Capcom, at least they tried something new. It’s probably the biggest horror game of 2017, no matter what happens.

Oh, be warned: the game’s plot and ending has leaked on the internet. Be careful where you look online until it’s officially out and in your hands.
