Pokémon Sword and Shield: How To Level Pokémon Up Quickly

Get that Magikarp into tip-top shape.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

Available now on Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Sword and Shield features a whole heap of Pokémon to capture across the region of Galar who get more difficult the further along you get into the game. That means that some of your old favourites who you keep around for cute factor instead of usefulness (sorry, Minccino) may become even less useful. So, if you want to level up quickly in Pokémon Sword and Shield to keep up with the best of them, what do you do?

Here are a few quick tips for levelling up super fast in Pokémon Sword and Shield. It’s not as laborious as it used to be in previous Pokémon games, but it can still take its sweet time.

Abuse The EXP Share

Pokémon Sword and Shield

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, all members of your party will earn EXP after a battle regardless of whether or not they actually take part. This is huge if you want to quickly level up a pretty weak Pokémon, especially as you likely won’t even have to depend on too many members of your party. If you want to give weaker Pokémon an even bigger share of the EXP, throw them out first and then swap out immediately to your stronger Pokémon to batter the opposition.

Grind Those Wells

Pokemon Wells

Are these imbalanced? Almost definitely. If you go out into a Wild Area, you might notice these wells which contain Dynamax Pokémon. You can battle these Pokémon in relatively easy raids with either other players or AI, but we recommend the latter if you want to farm EXP the quickest. After beating the Pokémon, you will get a handful of candies to spend on any Pokémon to boost them with better rewards being given out the higher the star rating of the raid. In just an hour or two, expect your party to be pretty beefy with how quickly they level up here.

Become Cooking Mama

Pokemon COOKING 1

You can set up a Pokémon Camp shortly into Pokémon Sword and Shield, which will allow you to marvel over the cuteness of your Pokémon while you play catch with them. You can also cook for them, which help strengthen your bond as well as give them some pretty decent EXP gains. All you need is a special ingredient and some berries, which can be found by foraging for them from special trees. If you cook them successive curries, your Pokémon should get 1000+ EXP like clockwork.

Send Them Out On Poké Jobs

Because Galar is apparently a capitalist’s dream, you can send your Pokémon out on Poké Jobs so that they will earn EXP. It’s very weird, especially as your Trainer goads them on to work hard. Anyway, you can find Rotom Phones in Pokémon Centers, from which you can send your Pokémon out on jobs for up to a day for maximum EXP. The job postings will often ask for a specific type of Pokémon with the right type earning more EXP. It’s about damn time Magikarp proved his worth.

Pokémon Sword and Shield are out now on Nintendo Switch.
