“Despite this Pokémon’s cute appearance, those who want to live with one should prepare to be on the receiving end of its electric jolt.” – Scarlet Pichu Pokédex entry

Pichu is a returning Pokemon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that has been in the franchise since Generation II. Pichu is a Electric-type Pokémon who eventually evolves into the mascot for the entire Pokémon franchise, Pikachu.

To evolve Pichu into Pikachu in Scarlet and Violet, players have to level up Pichu while you are at a high friendship level with them.

This is one of the more unique ways of evolving a Pokémon and it’s not immediately clear how to raise friendship level in Scarlet and Violet. In both games, you can raise friendship level with a Pokémon by pitching a picnic, and then playing with, petting, and washing that Pokémon until their friendship level increases.

Players can also use the Let’s Go mechanic in Scarlet and Violet to further bolsters friendships. Set Pichu as your lead Pokémon, then press R to send Pichu out and run alongside them, and they may also take part in auto-battles. Performing well in battles and coming to rely on them can also help your friendship to blossom.

Just in case you haven’t captured one yet, Pichu are most commonly found around southern Paldea and like to hang out near trees. They should be fairly low levels and very little fuss to catch.

If you wish to stop Pichu from evolving into Pikachu, even when they’re at max friendship, just press B when they start to evolve, or give them an Everstone to hold.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are available now on Switch.
