As part of Nintendo’s end-of-year financials, the company have revealed that the Nintendo Switch has managed to surpass 55 million units shipped since the console launched back in early 2017. It’s impressive, but Nintendo are apparently cautious about the Switch’s success heading into the new fiscal year, which ends in March 2021.
In the earnings call, Nintendo reported that there have been 55.77 million Switch units shipped since 2017, with 3.29 million sold over the last quarter (January 2020 – March 2020). Those sales have likely been bolstered by the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which also revealed some astounding sales figures today.
That said, Nintendo are playing it safe regarding the next financial year. Nintendo are estimating a total of 19 million Switch units sold during FY2020/21, down on the 21.03 million it shipped during the previous year. There are a number of reasons for this, chief among them being the Switch’s natural life-span leading to less sales as time goes on, the lack of confirmed release windows for big-name titles like Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3 or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, and of the course the ever-present effect of COVID-19.
