What movies are you looking forward to in the final month of 2021?

The end of the year is always a great time for film. Since it’s the holiday season, movie studios look at December as a great month for movie releases. Much like the summer movie season, we get tons of big, widely anticipated movies being released. Marvel is ending the year strong with another addition to the MCU, and there are a few other franchise movies making their way onto the big screens.

Some other movies you should check out that won’t be on this list are Sing 2 and Benedetta. The first Sing movie was pretty great, and the sequel looks like family-friendly fun. Benedetta, on the other hand, is absolutely adult and transgressive, a daring film that explores various ideas and genres. There’s quite the variety available this Christmas.

Here are the biggest new movies of December 2021.

New Movies of December 2021

1. Spider-Man: No Way Home | December 17th, 2021

All any fan of the MCU could think about this past year is whether or not this film will unite the various live-action Spider-M(e)n. There have been photos released of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield being in the movie, though we remain unsure if these are leaks or photoshopped efforts, so people have been speculating until they’ve gone quite mad. Even Garfield’s tired of being asked about it.

Whether they’re in it or not, the film has enough going for it already to get everyone excited.

We’re getting a team-up between Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, Doc Ock is back, and this may be the film that introduces the multi-verse into the MCU. Now that Mysterio has revealed Peter’s identity to the world, how will things end? I think the biggest obstacle with this film is trying not to get spoiled if you’re not watching it on opening week. So tread carefully dear readers.

2. Nightmare Alley | December 17th, 2021

Nightmare Alley is the remake of the 1947 movie of the same name. This remake is helmed by Guillermo del Toro, whose last big film went on to be an Oscar success.

The film follows Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), who becomes friendly with clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival. He uses his newly acquired knowledge to swindle the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society. With the faithful Molly (Rooney Mara) by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett).

All you need to do is look at the cast and the director, and you can see why this is easily one of the biggest releases of the year – hopefully, it doesn’t disappoint.

3. The Matrix Resurrections | December 22nd, 2021

The Matrix was released over 20 years ago, and after the conclusion of the trilogy, we thought things were done. But as long as the director and actors are willing to come back and revive the world, then I guess nothing is ever concluded.

The question is, how is there a fourth film? The trailer and posters have been analysed to death, with fans looking for Easter eggs and clues as to how Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) are back with us again. Especially Trinity, I mean, didn’t she die?

All will be revealed when the film releases and pretty much the only information we are certain of at this point is that Neo is back in the matrix. Let’s hope this resurrection will turn out to be a worthwhile endeavour.

4. The King’s Man | December 22nd, 2021

In the wake of numerous delays, The King’s Man is finally making its way into cinemas. After two pretty successful films in the franchise, we’re taking a break from Eggsy and going into the roots of the agency. Where did it all begin?

Director Matthew Vaughan is back again for this third installment; he also co-wrote the screenplay with Karl Gajdusek. The film deals with one man’s race against time to stop some of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds, who are plotting a war to wipe out millions. The man in question is the Duke of Oxford, played by Ralph Fiennes. The film also stars Gemma Arterton, Djimon Hounsou, Stanley Tucci, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Matthew Goode and Rhys Ifans.

Much like the other two films, we should expect tons of action sequences, lots of gore and violence, and probably a dialogue or two expounding on how “manners maketh the man”.

5. Don’t Look Up | December 24th, 2021

The cast for Netflix’s Don’t Look Up is basically a massive flex of star power and accolades. We have Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, both Oscar winning actors, in the lead roles; there’s Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep, who have also won Oscars, and then there’s tons of Oscar nominees, like Jonah Hill and Timothée Chalamet. We’ve even got Grammy winners Ariana Grande and Scott Mescudi in the mix. How much money did Netflix spend on this movie if Red Notice alone was 200 million? Apparently it’s only 75 million, and 55 of that went to DiCaprio and Lawrence.

Don’t Look Up is about two low-level astronomers who find themselves on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth. The problem? Nobody is taking them seriously.

The film is written and directed by Adam McKay, whose previous films The Big Short and Vice had star-studded casts as well. The film will have a limited release on December 10, 2021, and be released later on Netflix.
