Mark Hamill Thinks Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe is the Best Fighter

In an interview conducted to promote The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill has divulged a few fun Star Wars facts and opinions, including that he thinks that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s Chirrut Imwe (aka Donnie Yen) is the best Star Wars fighter:

The interview clip shows Hamill praising Donnie Yen’s impressive martial arts skills, stating “When I saw that, I thought, well, forget it. I mean, I should never pick up a lightsaber again. I mean, he’s just awesome…I was hugely impressed.” He also revealed that he’d like to party with Poe Dameron, claiming “He’s a cocky X-Wing pilot, I can relate to that!”

Donnie Yen is, of course, a master martial artist, famed for his roles in the Ip Man movies and a myriad of other action and martial arts movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kung Fu Killer. He spoke at MCM London Comic Con last October about his role as Chirrut Imwe, as well as his martial arts training.

His role as “blind monk” Chirrut Imwe in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story saw him as a Guardian of the destroyed Jedha temple beside Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), and viewers were treated to the sight of Chirrut taking down a small army of Stormtroopers with his hand-to-hand combat skills alone when we’re first introduced to him. (Though Baze and his heavy repeating cannon blaster may have also had something to do with it.) Donnie Yen got to show off his fighting skills in the majority of scenes that he was in, which were balanced alongside his calm, Kyber-guided teachings that he passed onto Jyn when they first met in Rogue One.
