The Lord of the Rings free-to-play MMO that was announced by Athlon Games back in 2018 and is being developed by Amazon Game Studios is reportedly working towards a PC open beta by early 2023, according to some documents that have recently emerged.

2023 For The LOTR Open Beta?

The news comes from some documents that were found by a user on ResetEra. According to them, Athlon Games’ owner, Leyou, was acquired by Tencent recently, which has lead to a variety of documents regarding the game’s development popping up on the official Leyou website. One such document is the Game License Amendment from 2019, which reveals a detailed schedule of the game’s development until the proposed open beta date of 2023.

The document states that a playable prototype of the game should be ready by June 1st, 2021, which is also the deadline for submission of the playable prototype with Saul Zaentz Company, the current owners of Middle-Earth Enterprises. From there, a closed beta on PC is scheduled for September 30th, 2022, while an open beta will launch on January 1st, 2023. It’s likely that last date is more of a placeholder, but still.

What About A Console Release?

If you’re really into the idea of playing MMOs on console, the Lord of the Rings MMO will be releasing on consoles in the year following the game’s open beta release on PC. The document states that the PS4 and Xbox One versions will be “Content Complete Playable” within six months of the open beta, with a commercial launch within 12 months. It’s interesting that only PS4 and Xbox One versions have been mentioned, but it’s likely that the MMO will also arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X | S.
