Kojima Meets With Jordan Vogt-Roberts To Discuss Metal Gear Solid Movie

This might just be wishful thinking, but I am beginning to hope in the new Metal Gear Solid movie. As a wonderfully convoluted franchise, condensing the lore of MGS into a movie that could stand on its own independent of possible sequels is, well, it’s impossible. There’s just no way it could toe the line between pleasing fans and capturing the attention of a casual audience, right?

Call me naive, but I can’t help but be nonetheless optimistic about the prospect of a Metal Gear Solid movie. If The Fantastic Four can get three movies to convince people that it isn’t the most inessential Marvel property (it is), then surely the barmy philosophy of Hideo Kojima deserves a cinematic outing.

With Jordan Vogt-Roberts, director of the inherently fun Kong: Skull Island, saying all the right things about directing the Metal Gear Solid adaptation, there’s more reason to be excited. Especially now that he’s met with Hideo Kojima to discuss it. From Kojima’s face, he’s either really intrigued by what he’s hearing or is gleefully trying to figure how to get Vogt-Roberts to cameo in Death Stranding.

It’s only a small leap to guess that they were chatting about the progress of the adaptation so far, which is still in its infancy — a script is coming along, but understandably slowly considering just how vast the Metal Gear Solid series. I wouldn’t want to try to write it, would you?

What’s interesting here is that Kojima has no real power when it comes to the MGS property anymore; it all rests with Konami. Following the acrimonious split between the two with plenty of rumours suggesting mistreatment from Konami, the Metal Gear series has had one “new” entry, Metal Gear Survive, which was basically just The Phantom Pain but with zombies and also quite shite.

While it’s unlikely that the Metal Gear Solid adaptation will break the video game movie curse, especially as most critics are prejudiced against them before they even sit down to watch one, but I am going to stay cautiously optimistic.

If there’s one thing I need to see, however, it’s a respected actor bellowing “SHALASHASKA?!” at the top of his lungs in total earnesty.
