James Gunn Is Back As Cameras Set to Roll on Guardians 3 in 2020

Looks like the Marvel Universe is far from Endgame.

Guardians of the Galaxy

After James Gunn’s reinstatement to the director’s chair for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we thought we would have to wait awhile before the movie hit the runway, especially with Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel slated to be released in 2021. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter in a recent article, Gunn will return to Marvel after his work on the Suicide Squad sequel is done, with Guardians Vol. 3 set to begin filming in 2020. The script has already been written, which explains why the accelerated timeline is plausible. They say hindsight is 20/20, but I have to admit that I did not see this coming.

While it seems filming in 2020 is more or less set in stone, what is not so certain is the time period of the movie. Will Vol. 3 be about the years between Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War, or look forward to beyond Avengers: Endgame, given the way the latter ends?

If I was a gambling woman, my money would go to the probability of Vol. 3 moving into a timeline after Endgame, given the time that has passed since Vol. 2, which teased the possibility of Adam Warlock coming into the picture, so that is something to look forward to.

Gunn initially wanted to have Adam Warlock appear in Vol. 2, but had to snip his inclusion due to lack of time. In Vol. 2, Ayesha unveils Adam as her ultimate weapon, which indicates that he would be a foe to the Guardians. However, Warlock is a good guy in the comics, so while he may be an enemy to the Guardians at first, his comic book roots dictate that he will eventually join them. Or maybe Gunn will go in a completely different direction. The good news is it won’t be too long before we get to see how it all unfolds. In the meantime, we have the whole MCU at our binge-watching disposal.
