In Galactic Civilizations 4, players will need to develop their economy and manage their empire by colonizing and taking planets. Planets will form the backbone of your faction’s ability to keep pace with all the other competing powers in the Milky Way galaxy and become the most prestigious empire.

Colony Worlds

All planets that are initially colonized will be classified as a Colony World. In fact, the vast majority of your empire will likely be composed of these planets.

The main feature of Colony Worlds is that they do not act as central production hubs and instead send their Inputs or raw resources found on the planet to the nearest Core World. Based on the distance between a Colony World and the target Core World, you will receive a reduced percentage of the total resource extracted from the colony due to upkeep costs and challenges of transporting goods over long distances.

Mainly, players won’t be able to manage any construction projects on Colony World and they’ll never grow new population or produce new ships unless they’re converted into Core Worlds. You’ll only be able to upgrade colonies with a single development project if you have the required technology researched.

Core Worlds will be your central hubs of activity and where players will have the most amount of leeway in developing and managing. These worlds are central points where Inputs from other planets are converted into Outputs – usable resources for the benefit of the greater empire. In essence, these will act as production centers and your regional capitals and should be protected at all costs.

To convert a colony to a Core World, you must assign a leader character to a governor position of the desired planet. Once assigned, the governor will unlock all remaining planetary management features, such as production queues, shipyard construction, and surface improvements. Leaders will also apply any bonuses from their character attributes to the planet.

The best planets to be converted to a full-fledged Core World are those with habitability ratings of Level 18 or greater, as lower-level planets won’t offer much in terms of resources to handle all necessary economic tasks.

 

Minerals and Manufacturing

The first and, arguably, the most important planetary Input-Output resource combo are Minerals and Manufacturing. Minerals are needed for a Core World to have a high Manufacturing rating, which directly answers for the speed at which all items are produced at the planet and its shipyard. The higher the Manufacturing level the quicker projects will finish

The basic ways of improving most Output resources are through constructing planetary districts and improvements and specializing citizens in particular tasks associated with one of the five main resources. However, technology, executive orders, governors, artifacts, environmental modifiers, and other effects can directly influence how much a planet produces.

 

Technology and Research

The Technology Input and Research Output are responsible for the empire’s ability to discover new technologies (not to be confused with the resource Input) and progress into new stages of development. Just like with Manufacturing, a high level of Research means you’ll more quickly gain access to new technologies and gain an edge over your neighbors.

 

Wealth and Income

To increase a planet’s cash flow, you’ll need to manage the Wealth Input and Income Output. The more Income you have on Core World the more money will flow into your faction’s coffers. Money will be needed for a variety of things, such as trade with other powers, but mainly for the recruitment of leaders.

 

Farming and Food

High Inputs of Farming and Outputs of Food help feed the population of your empire, as every citizen, depending on specific biological features, will require food to maintain them and grow new citizens. If you’re aiming to have a populous and expansive empire, you’ll need to track where your most fertile ground is to make sure you have a healthy, growing, and productive population.

 

Influence

The only Input-Output resource combo to be named exactly the same, Influence is the measure of a planet’s strength to spread your empire’s culture. This rating directly correlates to how much the borders of a specific planet will grow and develop installation and even planets of other empires. If your planetary influence is greater than the influence of an installation or planet within your borders, there will be a chance to peacefully change control of said point of interest solely through the power of your empire’s culture.

Planets and resources are everything in Galactic Civilizations 4 and most conflicts will be fought around exceptionally valuable colonies that can provide significant economic boosts to nearby Core Worlds. What will you do with your empire, once you have your economic base secured?
