What Is Euron Looking At In The Game of Thrones: Season 8 – Episode 5 Trailer?

Tinfoil time!

With episode 4 (incidentally the most disliked episode ever) of Game of Thrones in the rear window, HBO have shared a brief look at the next and penultimate episode of the show, which doesn’t honestly reveal much. That won’t stop us from speculating though, especially as these things are custom-made to be analysed.

It’s all as you’d expect: quick shots of characters looking stoic that doesn’t particularly suggest anything that you wouldn’t be already able to guess — war is coming, alright. However, the final shot of a puzzled and then, for what looks like the first time ever, scared Euron gazing into the sky with what sounds like a dragon screech of some kind closing the trailer out was an interesting moment.

Here are some of the things Euron might be looking at (sans a very tired joke about it being a Starbucks logo) in the Game of Thrones: Season 8 – episode 5 trailer ranked from most likely to least.

Drogon, But In Armour

This is almost certainly what he will be gazing at. Daenerys wasn’t too chuffed about Euron killing Rhaegal (one of her “children”) with the accuracy of Chris Kyle from behind a small rock even though she probably should have seen him coming, so expect her to put some armour on her last remaining dragon, Drogon, and unleash some fiery destruction. I mean, based on the books nothing should be able to pierce a dragon’s hide anyway, but whatever.

Absolutely Nothing

Euron Greyjpy

It’s not exactly uncommon for a trailer for an “event” production to mislead its audience – the Russos have been doing it for years with the MCU. Don’t be surprised, then, to learn that Euron could just be looking at some clouds and remarking on what great weather we’re having.

He’s also nuts, so he could just imagine something.

Rhaegal

As our Huw put it, Euron reaffirming to Cersei that Rhaegal is dead even though he did not definitively see his body has a touch of the “nobody could have survived that” that hints about him not being dead after all. Viserion took a lot to bite the bullet for good, if you’ll remember. That being said, the best dragon (yes, he is) took an impossibly accurate arrow to the neck and was already in bad shape beforehand because Daenerys is a terrible mother, so he probably is dead dead. Mind you, with the way this final season has been written, it’s not impossible.

Dragonstone Stone Dragons

Team Dragons 2

Cersei is down to one dragon, which apparently aren’t all that fearsome at all and can be killed quite easily — this, despite five or so seasons of them being mentioned as something to be feared. So, how to make up for the loss of dragons? Wake up some new ones, of course, specifically the stone dragons that Melisandre harped on about to Stannis in the books.

If you’re unfamiliar, legend basically dictates that Azor Ahai will return and bring stone dragons with him after awakening them at Dragonstone, which Daenerys is already plenty familiar with. However, considering that the show has: a) (to the best of my knowledge) never mentioned this; b) tossed aside Azor Ahai forever; c) killed off Melisandre, and d) no real king’s blood to use, then the likelihood of this is very slim indeed.

Also, as one last way of twisting the knife in this theory, the stone dragons Melisandre prophesised are probably Dany’s two thirds dead dragons anyway.

Drogon’s Babies

Game of Thrones Season 8 episode 4

There has been a pretty wild theory circulating for a few seasons now that suggests Drogon is actually a female dragon and was impregnated by Rhaegal or Viserion, which explains them flying away to Valyria that one time as they were laying eggs there.

A bunch of offspring dragons (which would be a decent enough size by now) turning up isn’t impossible — it would actually kind of fit the random writing of Season 8 to date. But the likelihood of it actually happening? Slim, or at least you’d hope.

Game Of ThronesSeason 7 Episode 6 REVIEW

Look, okay, so this is probably nonsense, but: what if the Night King isn’t really dead or has somehow come back with his army in tow? I mean, it was pretty anti-climactic the way he bowed out after eight seasons of build, so maybe winter is still coming after all.
