Epic Games have today announced that Save The World, the original form that the gigantic Fortnite took, will not be becoming free-to-play in 2018 as planned.
The news was revealed by Billy Bramer as part of a dev update for Save The World in which he mentioned that there were still some things they wanted to tweak before they felt comfortable with widening the audience for it.

The plan had been for Save The World to go free-to-play in Summer 2018, but that came and went with barely a word on it. The game is currently in Early Access with plenty of microtransactions and is PVE compared to Battle Royale’s PVP. It’s fun enough, but mad complex — something that Bramer mentioned the team were looking into.
No date has been announced as to when we can expect Save The World to go free.
Elsewhere in Fortnite, Epic have started teasing what we can expect from this year’s Fortnitemares, including the possibility of a return of Ghoul Trooper.
